The talk will explore the influence of Christianity on American Law from the late nineteenth century to the present, starting with key early figures like William Jennings Bryan and Walter Rauschenbush, and continuing to the recent influence of the Religious Right. The talk will focus in particular on Christians' shifting interpretations of the implications of the Sermon on the Mount, and will conclude with my own theory of the appropriate relationship between God's law and the secular law.
