SUMMARY:Moral Outrage: Who Are We To Say?
DESCRIPTION:Veritas Forum brings you: \nMoral Outrage\nWho Are We to Say?\nA conversation on where morals come from\, why they differ\, and what to do about it. \nApril 16th\, 2025\n7:00pm to 8:30pm ET\nKlarman Hall KG70\nor remotely via Zoom \nReception with Purity Ice Cream to follow! \nRegister Here\nTwo of the most common moral responses on campus are outrage and apathy. Why do we have these reactions to different sets of things? Can we trust our moral instincts? Audun Dahl\, a moral psychologist and David Lahti\, a Christian evolutionary biologist\, discuss what we can learn from their fields and how we might go about living with some of this knowledge. \nDavid Lahti; Associate Professor of Biology and Psychology\, CUNY\nDavid Lahti is an Associate Professor of Biology at Queens College\, City University of New York (CUNY)\, and is also affiliated with the doctoral faculty in Psychology and Biology at the CUNY Graduate Center. He leads the Behavior & Evolution Laboratory\, which focuses on learned behaviors in birds and humans\, cultural evolution\, rapid trait evolution\, and the development of morality and religion. \nLahti holds two PhDs: one in moral philosophy and philosophy of biology from the Whitefield Institute\, Oxford\, where he explored the contributions of science to understanding morality\, and another in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Michigan\, where he studied rapid evolution in African weaverbirds. His postdoctoral work included research on bird song development and human psychology from an evolutionary perspective. \nIn addition to his academic work\, Lahti integrates his scientific research with his Christian faith\, discussing topics such as cultural evolution and the interplay between science and religion. His lab consists of a diverse team working on projects ranging from ornithology to urban ecology. \nAudun Dahl; Professor of Psychology\, Cornell\nI am interested in development of morality across the lifespan. Every day\, from infancy to old age\, we encounter morally relevant events. We help or hurt another person\, or we witness others who help or hurt\, in both mundane and life-changing ways. As we develop\, and enter new social situations\, we encounter new rules for right and wrong behaviors. Religious texts spell out how to pray. Schools teach their students about how to use sources without plagiarizing. The abundance of moral and other principles prompts children and adults to determine\, again and again\, what makes for right and wrong ways of acting. \nThe Developmental Moral Psychology Lab studies how we reason\, judge\, feel\, and act around issues of right and wrong across the lifespan. We also study how morality develops through everyday social interactions\, starting in early childhood. We use a variety of methods—including laboratory experiments\, naturalistic observations\, structured interviews\, and surveys—to study infants\, children\, adolescents\, and adults from different communities. For instance\, we study how infants begin to help and harm others\, and how adults form judgments and decisions about complex issues\, such as academic integrity and moral dilemmas. Through this range of methods and age groups\, we seek to understand both the diversity and the unity of human morality. \nToni Alimi; (moderator) Assistant Professor of Classics\, Cornell \nMy research and teaching span ancient Roman philosophy (specializing in Lactantius and Augustine)\, intellectual history (focusing on freedom\, slavery\, law\, rule\, and authority)\, contemporary ethics and politics (idem)\, and philosophy of religion. My first book\, Slaves of God\, explicates Augustine’s reasons for justifying slavery and argues that slavery is a central theme in his broader ethics and politics. \nI’m in the early stages of research for a broader philosophical history of slavery (tentatively titled Slavery: A Philosophical History)\, which will trace the development of ideas of natural and retributive slavery from their ancient Greek and Roman provenances through late antiquity\, medieval and early modern Christianity\, into the antebellum United States. \nAs a Klarman Fellow (2021-2024)\, I am a postdoctoral associate in Classics with an affiliate appointment in Philosophy. Before Cornell\, I earned the Ph.D. in Religion\, Ethics\, and Politics from Princeton University\, the M.A.R. in Ethics from Yale Divinity School\, and the A.B. in Religion from Princeton University. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:CURW Care Group | Racial Dignity\, Trauma\, & Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:In the Body: Racial Dignity\, Trauma\, & Solidarity \n“In the Body” will be a 6 session small group led by Chesterton House staff\, Cole Arthur Riley.  This small group is open to BIPOC students of any or no religious background. We will cultivate a space of storytelling\, celebration\, lament\, and solidarity\, and try to discern our spirituality as we exist in the deep racialized trauma of the US and our communities. We will think through what it means to cling to faith during a political season that runs the risk of alienating our bodies and spirituality. Our discussions will be prompted each week by a quote from a historic BIPOC thinker or activist. \nREGISTER HERE\nWhat is a Care Group? \n \nThese groups are not therapy groups\, nor are they seminar-style study groups; rather\, they are chaplain-facilitated community groups that help you give and receive spiritual support and care. The length\, frequency\, and audience for each group varies\, but what they have in common is a commitment to creating spaces that nurture holistic wellbeing. \nCURW is a cooperative interfaith ministry team with religious leaders who represent a variety of spiritual traditions. CURW Care Groups are not intended to be spaces for proselytizing or converting people to a particular religious point of view; rather\, they are designed to be spaces where each member can share their spiritual perspectives and make meaning of their experiences. We affirm the individual experiences and approaches to spirituality that each student may bring to these conversations. All Care Group participants are encouraged to speak from their own particular experiences and respect the experiences of others. \nLearn more about other CURW Care Groups!

SUMMARY:CANCELED | There and Back Again: Humanities to Science
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the History of Art Gallery in Goldwin Smith Hall (ground floor\, south wing\, connected to GM08) as we talk with Dr. Hannah Eagleson about humanities\, science\, and the Christian tradition. Pizza to follow! \nDr. Hannah Eagleson is Assistant Director of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship’s Emerging Scholars Network (ESN)\, where she supports over 4000 Christians to live out their vocation in higher education and beyond. She’s working toward a world where every Christian with an advanced degree is energized throughout their careers to think\, teach\, and engage missionally for the common good with the university\, the church\, and the world. To that end\, ESN builds pathways and resources for Christian academics everywhere to find the relationships\, ideas\, and public voice they need in the early decades of their careers. Dr. Eagleson’s most recent book is Science and Faith: Student Questions Explored\, from Hendrickson Publishers (2019). With Emerging Scholars Network\, Dr. Eagleson also launched an ongoing online devotional for academics exploring their vocation\, called Scholar’s Compass (https://blog.emergingscholars.org). She holds a PhD in Renaissance literature from the University of Delaware and an MA in liberal arts from St. John’s College in Annapolis\, Maryland. She co-designed a series of study guides to works by J. R. R. Tolkien\, C. S. Lewis\, and Dorothy L. Sayers for Classical Academic Press.

SUMMARY:"Public Reading of Scripture" Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to a breakfast and “Public Reading of Scripture” gathering. \nThe Public Reading of Scripture helped God’s people remember who God is\, who they were\, and who they are called to be. This practice was so important to Paul that in 1 Timothy 4:13\, he instructed all to “… devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture\, to preaching and to teaching.” Come listen and share in this practice with us on Friday\, October 4 at the women’s residence. \nMade possible by the Grace and Mercy Foundation
