How do we make sense of the ideals of liberty and equality alongside the realities of slavery and racism? And what might we discover when we look beyond familiar narratives and listen to a wider range of voices from the period? \nIn 2021\, as the killing of George Floyd\, protests\, and debates over public statues brought these questions into renewed focus\, Angel Adams Parham\, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia\, sensed a need for a different way of approaching the conversation—one that returned to primary sources and took seriously the religious and intellectual worlds that shaped them. \nThis conviction led her through a series of transformative conversations within the past\, reading America’s founding documents alongside Black writers of the same era whose work drew deeply from the Christian tradition. Theology matters\, it turns out\, for how we understand this mystery. \nAngel Adams Parham; Associate Professor of Sociology and Senior Fellow Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia \nAngel Adams Parham engages in research on the historical and comparative-historical sociology of race. She is the author of American Routes: Racial Palimpsests and the Transformation of Race (Oxford\, 2017) which examines changes in race and racialization in New Orleans under the French\, Spanish and Anglo-American administrations. The book was co-winner of the Social Science History Association’s Allan Sharlin Memorial book award (2018); co-winner of the American Sociological Association’s Barrington Moore book award in comparative-historical sociology (2018); and recipient of an Honorable Mention from the Thomas & Znaniecki Best Book Award\, International Migration Section\, American Sociological Association (2018). She is currently at work on a book manuscript tentatively entitled “Reckoning and Reconciliation: On Race\, Place\, and Memory in American Life” which compares and contrasts the social histories of three key sites in New Orleans over a three-hundred-year period. The book considers how it might be possible to examine and publicly discuss contentious racial histories in ways that are more rather than less conducive to civic solidarity. \nIn addition to this research\, she is active in public-facing teaching and scholarship where she provides training for K-12 educators who are looking to better integrate Black writers and Black history into their teaching. As part of this work\, she authored The Black Intellectual Tradition: Reading Freedom in Classical Literature (Classical Academic Press\, 2022\, co-authored with Anika Prather)\, and founded Nyansa Classical Community\, a non-profit which creates classical curricula and programming designed to connect with students from diverse backgrounds. She is also at work on another public-facing book entitled “Conversations on American Freedom” which places Black writers of the 18th and 19th centuries into conversation with founders and founding documents as a way of deeply exploring questions concerning freedom and the American project. \nParham has published articles on the intersection of Black writers and the classics in popular outlets including the Washington Post\, Wall Street Journal\, Comment Magazine\, Public Discourse\, and Common Good Magazine. Parham has been a member of the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton\, as well as the recipient of a Fulbright grant. He formed the human from the dust of the earth\, then commanded the human to engage in technological development so that humans could become free from their bodies\, from the constraints of space and time\, from the awkwardnesses of real encounters in the body\, and finally from death itself. \nOf course\, we immediately recognize this as a parody\, but how often do we live in our digitally-saturated world as if it were true? As if we were meant to live not as embodied human beings made to worship the God of creation\, incarnation\, and resurrection and to abide in incarnate relationship with others in community\, but as humans accepting a call from The Digital to advance into a transhumanist future which aims deliver us from our bodily limitations? \nUnlike early forms of technology\, like hammers and windmills and printing presses\, modern automatic machine technology is increasingly removing us from a vital and intimate connection with the Creator and the creation. It is affecting our cognition\, our skills\, our possibilities for employment\, and making us more lonely and disconnected from concrete communities of friends we can lean on. \nAll of this doesn’t come without real benefits. But at what cost? Since 2009 Jack has given leadership to the Navigators’ Global Enterprise Network. What may feel like a series of small\, neutral habits has quietly become a daily rhythm—one we repeat almost without thinking. \nBut how did this happen? While we may be the ones opening our apps\, our habits are also reflective of a broader culture. One that often requires near constant digital connectivity for school\, work\, and life. These rhythms are both personal and societal. And they are also shaping us more than we realize. \nOur “digital liturgies” inform our desires\, shape our thoughts\, and influence our understanding of what it means to be human. And what happens when these digital habits– intentionally designed to keep us coming back for more–begin to crowd out the sacred liturgies that were meant to frame our lives? The rhythms meant to ground us in goodness\, truth\, and beauty are pushed to the margins. A life meant to be lived in communion with God and one another is slowly replaced by the façade of connection\, and we find ourselves increasingly isolated. \nSociologist and author Felicia Wu Song has spent years studying how these digital structures shape our lives and exploring more meaningful alternatives. Through her “Freedom Project\,” she invites students into practices from the Christian tradition\, offering concrete ways to recover sacred habits and real communion with God and one another. \nJoin us for this Chesterton Perspectives event as we explore connection\, communion\, and the liturgies that shape us. \n. \nFelicia Wu Song; Sociologist\, writer and speaker on social effects of digital technology. Former academic and professor who taught for over twenty years on university and liberal arts college campuses.\nFelicia Wu Song \nis a cultural sociologist who studies the place of digital technologies in contemporary life. Having trained in History\, Communication Studies and Sociology from Yale\, Northwestern\, and University of Virginia\, her research is oriented around the rapidly evolving digital technology industry and how the adoption of social media and digital devices fundamentally alters the landscapes of family\, community\, and organizational life. \nShe is author of Restless Devices: Recovering Personhood\, Presence and Place in the Digital Age (InterVarsity Press Academic\, released November 2021) and Virtual Communities: Bowling Alone\, Online Together (Peter Lang 2009). Dr. Song’s prior research has included studies of expectant women’s online information-seeking habits and the evolution of “mommy bloggers” as social media professionals. \nShe regularly speaks on digital practices\, social media\, the digital media industry\, parenting in the digital age\, and spiritual formation at universities and colleges\, churches\, schools\, parent groups\, and conferences. Dr. Song’s expertise has been sought by a wide range of organizations including BioLogos\, The Vatican\, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship\, Trinity Forum\, Thinq Culture Summit\, National Association of Evangelicals\, Notre Dame University\, Fuller Theological Seminary\, Calvin University\, and Asian American Christian Collaborative. \nDr. Song lives in Portland Oregon with her husband and two teenaged children. These apocalyptic visions result in the reasonable call for caution and serious reflection on how AI shapes human flourishing. \nBut what if these dramatic threats are massively overstated? What if that future is far less likely than we fear? Could it be that\, in the fervor of it all\, we’ve forgotten some crucial things: that AI does not evolve on its own but has to be built\, and that human beings remain responsible for what they create? \nMight this doomsdaying be keeping us from exploring real benefits for real people: freeing them from menial and life-denying work\, improving care for those vulnerable to seizure\, and perhaps one day preventing most diseases? \nAnd\, what if the most harmful effects of AI are actually more hidden\, less acknowledged issues related to mental health\, addiction\, and loneliness? \nIn other words\, we need to think less about the visions of apocalyptic doomsayers and more about this human side of digital tech. \nJoin us as we welcome MIT Professor and AI researcher Roz Picard to Chesterton Perspectives. Recently interviewed by the BBC on these questions\, she brings insight not only as a scientist and engineer\, but also as an entrepreneur\, inventor\, and a Christian. Hermann Professor in Health Sciences and Technology at the MIT Media Lab\, where she is founder and director of the Affective Computing Research Group\, Associate Academic Head\, and affiliated with the MIT Center for Neurobiological Engineering. She is the author of the book Affective Computing and co-author of hundreds of peer-reviewed science and engineering articles in artificial intelligence\, digital health\, affective computing\, and human-computer interaction. An inventor on over 100 worldwide and US patents\, she is co-founder and chief scientist of Empatica\, providing FDA-cleared digital biomarkers and medical quality data and devices for clinical trials and research studies\, and helping people with epilepsy and Parkinson’s. Picard is also co-founder of Affectiva\, now part of Smart Eye AB. She is a popular speaker with a TED talk of over 2 million views.
