SUMMARY:Alumni Seminar: Introduction to Augustine’s Confessions
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for a doable way to explore profound ideas that shape the Christian tradition? Would you like to experience some of the most beautiful writing in Christian thought along the way? Join us to explore one of the most influential and engaging texts of church history\, Augustine’s Confessions. \nWe’ll build community with Chesterton House alumni through a deep exploration of key moments in Augustine’s narrative. We’ll meet each week\, read a short section together\, and then discuss it in humanities seminar style. \nLed by Dr. Hannah Eagleson\, this course will include a guest interview with Augustine scholar Dr. Toni Alimi\, a Klarman Postdoctoral Fellow in Classics and Philosophy at Cornell. \nSchedule of Readings: \nSix Thursdays from Jan 13-Feb 17\, 8-9:15pm Eastern \nJan 13\, 20\, 27; February 3\,10\,17 \nJan 13\, Week 1: Beginnings\, excerpt from Book 1 (1.1-6.10)\nJan 20\, Week 2: Pears and the Fall\, excerpt from Book 2 (4.9-9.17)\nJan 27\, Week 3: Struggle & Redemption\, excerpt from Book 8 (6.14-8.19\nFeb 3\, Week 4: Struggle & Redemption\, excerpt from Book 8 (8.20-8.30)\nFeb 10\, Week 5: Imagining Paradise\, excerpt from Book 9 (10.23-10.25\, possibly also include part of Book 11.1.1-8.10)\nFeb 17\, Week 6: Time & Eternity\, excerpt from Book 13 (28.43-28.53\, end of book) \nDiscussion Leader Info: \nDr. Hannah Eagleson is Director of Graduate & Faculty Engagement for Chesterton House. She also serves as Associate Director of InterVarsity’s Emerging Scholars Network. Dr. Eagleson holds a PhD in Renaissance literature from the University of Delaware and an MA in liberal arts from St. John’s College (Annapolis\, MD). She has participated in academic seminars at the Folger Shakespeare Library\, crafted a lecture and concert featuring musical settings of medieval and modern poetry\, and taught English courses featuring Shakespeare\, fantastic literature\, and a survey of medieval and early modern literature. Her published writing includes study guides to works by Tolkien\, Lewis\, and Sayers with Classical Academic Press. You can read more about her work here: https://hannaheagleson.com/ \nGuest Interviewee Info: Dr. Toni Alimi \nhttps://philosophy.cornell.edu/toni-alimi \nMy research and teaching span ancient Roman philosophy (specializing in Augustine)\, intellectual history (focusing on freedom\, slavery\, law\, rule\, and authority)\, contemporary ethics and politics (idem)\, and philosophy of religion (especially on religion and morality). My current book project\, Slaves of God\, explicates Augustine’s reasons for justifying slavery and argues for the centrality of slavery in his ethics and politics. I’m in the early stages of research on an intellectual history of penal slavery (tentatively titled Precarious: Penal Slavery and the Rights of Citizens)\, which will trace the development of penal slavery from its ancient Roman provenances through late antique\, medieval\, and early modern Christian thought\, and into the modern context. Other recent areas of research include: 1) the normative structure of covenants; 2) Augustine’s metaphysics of goodness; 3) theism and the problem of divine domination 4) the prospects for realism about aesthetic judgments; and 5) the meaning of ‘maturity’ in the history of philosophy. I am currently a postdoctoral associate in Classics with an affiliate appointment in Philosophy as a Klarman Fellow. Before Cornell\, I earned the Ph.D. in Religion\, Ethics\, and Politics from Princeton University\, the M.A.R. in Ethics from Yale Divinity School\, and the A.B. in Religion from Princeton University. \n

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Clear that Friday morning\, friends. Public Reading of Scripture is BACK starting this Friday\, February 11th from 9:00-10:00AM at 111 The Knoll. Why do we think it’s important to read the scriptures aloud\, together? Well\, turns out this is the way that early Christians initially received and continued to share the good news about Jesus Christ….and tell the epic\, ever-expansive story that God chooses to reveal through ridiculously –ordinary- people. We won’t shy away from grisly and confusing passages\, because we trust that wrestling through the text in its fullness –together- is worth it. Curiosity piqued? Grab a friend and join us for breakfast — we’ll pick up right where we left off last semester with the Gospel of Luke\, the Book of Exodus\, and the Psalms. See you there!

SUMMARY:When Science Meets the Real World: Covid\, Climate Change\, & the Challenge of Authority
DESCRIPTION:Religious communities are sometimes deeply divided about the role of science and scientists in society. On the one hand\, some Christian (and particularly white evangelical) churches are perceived as not taking COVID and climate change seriously\, which manifests as vaccine resistance and disinterest in conservation efforts. This can lead to tragic death and inaction in areas of urgency for the common good.\n\n \nOn the other hand\, Christians with high levels of education and privilege are often accused of regarding their less educated religious compatriots with moral condescension or even outright contempt. The perceived lack of intellectual humility has been connected to the censorship or even punishment of those who question scientific consensus.\n\n \nJoin us as we sit with two senior scholars\, campus leaders\, and thinkers at the nexus of faith and science. From their respective disciplines of ecology and molecular biology they have unique perspectives on how the fractures mentioned above play out in the research world and in lay communities across the country.\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Loneliness & The Bonds of Love
DESCRIPTION:Questions of sexuality and gender are not merely theoretical or abstract questions of theology and ethics\, but connect with our deeply personal longings and (often) hidden suffering. Wesley Hill\, an accomplished New Testament scholar\, author of the 2015 Paul and the Trinity from Eerdmans Press\, has spent years approaching these questions with theological skill and pastoral sensitivity. In his acclaimed 2010 book Washed and Waiting\, Hill gave an eloquent reflection of his own experience as a celibate gay Christian\, and his subsequent 2015 book Spiritual Friendship further explored the positive role that Christ-centered chaste friendships could play in celibate gay Christians’ lives. \n\n\nJoin us in conversation with Wesley to hear his reflections on the life of discipleship and how it relates to cultural conflicts around sexual ideology. \n\n\nRegister Here
