SUMMARY:Freud and the Rise of the Sexualized Self: A Conversation with Carl Trueman
DESCRIPTION:In his recent book\, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self\, historical theologian Carl Trueman takes the reader on a detailed tour through intellectual history\, arguing that the emergence of today’s cultural flashpoints on sexuality and gender really emerge from changing ideas of the self\,. Sigmund Freud is a pivotal hinge point in this cultural transformation\, moving from a vision of sexuality as needing a proper ordering on both religious and philosophical grounds\, to a more expressive and individualist approach to sexuality that is often assumed today. \n\n\n\nWith this Freudian pivot\, longstanding Christian views of sexuality and the self come under suspicion\, as they prevent humans from fully expressing themselves. How should Christians respond? Join us in conversation with Carl Trueman as we explore how rival concepts of human selfhood play out in our culture wars. \n\n\nProfessor Trueman will be present via zoom.\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Can Cosmological Theories Connect with a Creator? Faith\, the Expanding Universe\, and George LeMaitre
DESCRIPTION:How should current cosmological theories inform a Christian understanding of how God created the world? When fundamental sciences interact with theology\, Christians must determine how to be faithful both to their disciplinary craft as well as their confessional commitments. One of the most striking case studies of these challenges comes from the little-known story of Fr. George LeMaître\, a Belgian priest as well as brilliant theoretical physicist who laid the groundwork for the Big Bang theory. \n\n\n\nJoin us in conversation with Professor Jonathan Lunine\, chair of Cornell’s Astronomy department\, as he relates his own experience researching the history of LeMaître’s work and how it provides a guide for current vexing questions that we face today. \n\n\nProfessor Lunine will be in person with us for this event.\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to breakfast and a “Public Reading of Scripture” every Friday morning. \nThe Public Reading of Scripture helped God’s people remember who God is\, who they were\, and who they are called to be. SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Clear that Friday morning\, friends. Public Reading of Scripture is BACK starting this Friday\, February 11th from 9:00-10:00AM at 111 The Knoll. Why do we think it’s important to read the scriptures aloud\, together? Well\, turns out this is the way that early Christians initially received and continued to share the good news about Jesus Christ….and tell the epic\, ever-expansive story that God chooses to reveal through ridiculously –ordinary- people. We won’t shy away from grisly and confusing passages\, because we trust that wrestling through the text in its fullness –together- is worth it. Curiosity piqued? Grab a friend and join us for breakfast — we’ll pick up right where we left off last semester with the Gospel of Luke\, the Book of Exodus\, and the Psalms. See you there!

SUMMARY:AI and The Common Good
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence is now a basic part of daily life\, supporting our health\, directing government services\, shaping relationships\, and even ordering our spiritual lives. As AI becomes more widespread amidst scandals over its misuse\, public trust in technology companies has declined. How can we ensure that AI serves the common good? Can Christian insights on personhood\, beneficence\, and justice provide wisdom to guide those who design\, use\, and govern AI systems? \nOn June 23\, join leading experts Roz Picard of MIT and Nathan Matias of Cornell University for a stimulating conversation about these critical questions\, co-sponsored by the Octet Collaborative at MIT and Chesterton House at Cornell. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be held on Zoom only.\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to breakfast and a “Public Reading of Scripture” every Friday morning. \nThe Public Reading of Scripture helped God’s people remember who God is\, who they were\, and who they are called to be. This practice was so important to Paul that in 1 Timothy 4:13\, he instructed all to “… devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture\, to preaching and to teaching.” Come eat\, listen\, and share in this historic practice with us weekly at the women’s residence. \nMade possible by the Grace and Mercy Foundation

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture on the Knoll! \n  \nWhy do we think it’s important to read the scriptures aloud\, together? Well\, turns out this is the way that early Christians initially received and continued to share the good news about Jesus Christ….and tell the epic\, ever-expansive story that God chooses to reveal through ridiculously –ordinary- people. \n  \nWe won’t shy away from grisly and confusing passages\, because we trust that wrestling through the text in its fullness –together- is worth it. \n  \nCuriosity piqued? Grab a friend and join us this Friday at 9am \n  \nHope to see you on the Knoll!
