SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture at CHOP
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the historic Cornell House of Prayer (CHOP)\, and stay for some free pizza! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Thursday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us!

SUMMARY:Moral Outrage: Who Are We To Say?
DESCRIPTION:Veritas Forum brings you: \nMoral Outrage\nWho Are We to Say?\nA conversation on where morals come from\, why they differ\, and what to do about it. \nApril 16th\, 2025\n7:00pm to 8:30pm ET\nKlarman Hall KG70\nor remotely via Zoom \nReception with Purity Ice Cream to follow! \nRegister Here\nTwo of the most common moral responses on campus are outrage and apathy. Why do we have these reactions to different sets of things? Can we trust our moral instincts? Audun Dahl\, a moral psychologist and David Lahti\, a Christian evolutionary biologist\, discuss what we can learn from their fields and how we might go about living with some of this knowledge. \nDavid Lahti; Associate Professor of Biology and Psychology\, CUNY\nDavid Lahti is an Associate Professor of Biology at Queens College\, City University of New York (CUNY)\, and is also affiliated with the doctoral faculty in Psychology and Biology at the CUNY Graduate Center. He leads the Behavior & Evolution Laboratory\, which focuses on learned behaviors in birds and humans\, cultural evolution\, rapid trait evolution\, and the development of morality and religion. \nLahti holds two PhDs: one in moral philosophy and philosophy of biology from the Whitefield Institute\, Oxford\, where he explored the contributions of science to understanding morality\, and another in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Michigan\, where he studied rapid evolution in African weaverbirds. His postdoctoral work included research on bird song development and human psychology from an evolutionary perspective. \nIn addition to his academic work\, Lahti integrates his scientific research with his Christian faith\, discussing topics such as cultural evolution and the interplay between science and religion. His lab consists of a diverse team working on projects ranging from ornithology to urban ecology. \nAudun Dahl; Professor of Psychology\, Cornell\nI am interested in development of morality across the lifespan. Every day\, from infancy to old age\, we encounter morally relevant events. We help or hurt another person\, or we witness others who help or hurt\, in both mundane and life-changing ways. As we develop\, and enter new social situations\, we encounter new rules for right and wrong behaviors. Religious texts spell out how to pray. Schools teach their students about how to use sources without plagiarizing. The abundance of moral and other principles prompts children and adults to determine\, again and again\, what makes for right and wrong ways of acting. \nThe Developmental Moral Psychology Lab studies how we reason\, judge\, feel\, and act around issues of right and wrong across the lifespan. We also study how morality develops through everyday social interactions\, starting in early childhood. We use a variety of methods—including laboratory experiments\, naturalistic observations\, structured interviews\, and surveys—to study infants\, children\, adolescents\, and adults from different communities. For instance\, we study how infants begin to help and harm others\, and how adults form judgments and decisions about complex issues\, such as academic integrity and moral dilemmas. Through this range of methods and age groups\, we seek to understand both the diversity and the unity of human morality. \nToni Alimi; (moderator) Assistant Professor of Classics\, Cornell \nMy research and teaching span ancient Roman philosophy (specializing in Lactantius and Augustine)\, intellectual history (focusing on freedom\, slavery\, law\, rule\, and authority)\, contemporary ethics and politics (idem)\, and philosophy of religion. My first book\, Slaves of God\, explicates Augustine’s reasons for justifying slavery and argues that slavery is a central theme in his broader ethics and politics. \nI’m in the early stages of research for a broader philosophical history of slavery (tentatively titled Slavery: A Philosophical History)\, which will trace the development of ideas of natural and retributive slavery from their ancient Greek and Roman provenances through late antiquity\, medieval and early modern Christianity\, into the antebellum United States. \nAs a Klarman Fellow (2021-2024)\, I am a postdoctoral associate in Classics with an affiliate appointment in Philosophy. Before Cornell\, I earned the Ph.D. in Religion\, Ethics\, and Politics from Princeton University\, the M.A.R. in Ethics from Yale Divinity School\, and the A.B. in Religion from Princeton University. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture at the Knoll
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

SUMMARY:Can We Talk About it? Why Faith Remains the Hardest Conversation on Campus
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by Chesterton House and COLLIS Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture\nCan We Talk About It? Why Faith Remains the Hardest Conversation on Campus\nApril 10\, 2025\n5:30 pm EST Physical Sciences 120 or via Zoom \nRegister Here \nThe university is meant to be a place where every idea can be discussed\, debated\, and tested. But does it always live up to that ideal? When it comes to faith\, many students and faculty feel pressured to self-censor\, avoiding ideas that might ruffle too many feathers. Yet\, faith and religion have a profound impact throughout politics\, science\, mental health\, and beyond. Is this self-censorship leaving crucial issues underdiscussed? \nAuthor Mary Eberstadt ‘83\, Senior Research Fellow at the Faith and Reason Institute in Washington DC\, understands these challenges first-hand. A Cornell graduate\, she will share with us her journey to becoming a Christian public intellectual\, why faith remains such a difficult topic on many campuses that claim to champion open dialogue\, and how to navigate these challenges in both truthful and winsome ways. Join us for a conversation about how to bring faith conversations back into academic and public discourse and why doing so matters. \n  \nMary Eberstadt ’83; Panula Chair in Christian Culture\, Catholic Information Center\nMary Eberstadt is an American writer\, and author of several influential books including How the West Really Lost God; Adam and Eve after the Pill; and Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics. She also authored a novel called The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life\, Death\, and Atheism\, which debuted as a stage-play in 2017. She has written for many journals and magazines\, and her work has been translated into numerous languages. \nMrs. Eberstadt is a senior research fellow at the Faith and Reason Institute\, and she holds the Panula Chair at the Catholic Information center in Washington\, DC. Her early career includes two years as a speechwriter to an American Secretary of State\, George Shultz\, and another year as speechwriter to a U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations\, Jeane Kirkpatrick. She holds honorary doctorates in humane letters from Seton Hall University in New Jersey and from Magdalen College\, New Hampshire. \nMary Eberstadt is delighted to be appearing this week at her alma mater. She grew up in Central New York\, and she enjoys several personal ties to Cornell\, where she graduated magna cum laude with a double major in Philosophy and Government. Her senior paper\, on Immanuel Kant’s theory of aesthetic judgment\, was supervised in part by a mentor who was one of the titans of\nCornell’s philosophy faculty\, the late Norman Kretzmann. Mary resided throughout her undergraduate years in Telluride House\, and she worked for four years as a special assistant in the Philosophy Department. \nFinally\, Mary is also embarking in 2025 on a new\, five-year\, multidimensional project\, “Remembering Upstate New York\,” dedicated to bringing the region’s extraordinary history and culture to new literary and theatrical life. SUMMARY:Was the Church Right About the Sexual Revolution?
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by Chesterton House and COLLIS Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture\nWas the Church Right About the Sexual Revolution? Taking Stock of a Failed Experiment\nApril 9\, 2025\n6:30 pm EST | 111 The Knoll Rd\n*Registration Required \nRegister Here \nFew movements have had as much social transformation as the sexual revolution. More freedom\, more sex\, more control over how and when we reproduce—the sexual revolution promised a happier and more equitable future. Paradoxically\, however\, recent research has suggested that women are less happy now than half a century ago. A slew of books in recent years now question whether the sexual revolution overpromised and underdelivered. Join us for a conversation with Mary Eberstadt on taking stock of the sexual revolution—and whether the Church predicted what we’re seeing today. SUMMARY:From Mines to Vines: Cultivating Peace through Agriculture & Faith
DESCRIPTION:From Mines to Vines: Cultivating Peace through Agriculture & Faith\nA Laureate Lecture by Ms. Heidi Kühn\, Founder & CEO of Roots of Peace\, World Food Prize Laureate\, and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee\n+ Panel Discussion with:\nDr. Christopher Barrett\, Professor of Applied Economics and Management\, Cornell University\nNodjibeye Cherubin\, Civil Engineer and Humphrey Fellow from Chad\nFrancine Barchett\, (moderator) Cornell PhD Candidate and Youth Member\, World Food Prize Foundation Council of Advisors \nApril 8\, 2025\n7:30 PM EST\nReception & hours d’ourves to follow\nPhysical Sciences 120 or via Zoom\nRegister Here \nAcross nearly 70 countries\, landmines and unexploded ordnances sow fear and uncertainty\, and many remain long after conflicts end. In 1997\, guided by her Catholic faith and care for human dignity\, Heidi Kühn founded Roots of Peace to help turn “mines to vines” — replacing remnants of war with regenerative agriculture. Since then\, her organization has removed over 100\,000 landmines and restored farming livelihoods in ten countries\, from Croatia to Afghanistan\, Vietnam\, and beyond. \nIn this special Laureate Lecture at Cornell University\, Ms. Kühn will explore the intersection of agriculture\, peacebuilding\, and spiritual conviction. She will be joined by a panel of experts who will reflect on how the Christian faith can inspire practical solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges in collaboration with scholars and practitioners from many different religions. \nWhether you are religious\, spiritual\, or secular\, all are welcome to engage in this conversation about belonging\, purpose\, and the shared human calling to care for one another and the Earth. \nPanelists: \n\nDr. Christopher Barrett\, Professor of Applied Economics and Management\, Cornell University\nNodjibeye Cherubin\, Civil Engineer and Humphrey Fellow from Chad\nFrancine Barchett\, Cornell PhD Candidate and Youth Member\, World Food Prize Foundation Council of Advisors (Moderator)\n\nCo-sponsored by World Food Prize Foundation • Cornell Department of Global Development • Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability • Office of Meaning Making & Spirituality • Cornell Faith & Environment Collective • Chesterton House • Cornell COLLIS Institute of Catholic Thought & Culture • American Scientific Affiliation \nHeidi Kühn; Founder & CEO of Roots of Peace\, World Food Prize Laureate\, and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee\nHeidi Kühn is a visionary leader whose life’s work has been dedicated to cultivating peace in places once ravaged by conflict. A graduate of the University of California\, Berkeley\, in 1979 with a degree in Political Economics\, Heidi emerged from the era of the Peace Movement with a determination to transform its ideals into tangible action. \nHer early career in journalism saw her founding NewsLink International\, a news agency reporting on glasnost and perestroika from the Soviet Union. From Alaska’s frozen frontiers to the heart of Cold War tensions\, Heidi’s stories for CNN\, ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, Nippon TV\, and Sky News helped bridge divides\, fostering understanding where walls once stood. \nIn 1997\, following her own battle with cancer\, Heidi took on another silent killer—landmines. She founded Roots of Peace\, a humanitarian organization dedicated to replacing fields of destruction with fields of life. Through the “Mines to Vines” initiative\, Heidi has transformed war-torn landscapes into thriving vineyards and orchards. For Heidi\, landmines were a “cancer of the earth\,” and her mission was clear: restore hope\, food security\, and livelihoods to millions. \nRoots of Peace has made an extraordinary impact: over 100\,000 landmines and unexploded bombs removed\, more than 7 million fruit trees planted\, and agricultural livelihoods restored to over 1 million farmers and families across ten countries\, including Afghanistan\, Angola\, Bosnia-Herzegovina\, Cambodia\, Croatia\, Iraq\, Israel\, Palestine\, and Vietnam. \nNotably\, Heidi’s leadership in Afghanistan contributed to a transformative USAID program\, which increased the country’s agricultural exports from $250 million in 2014 to over $1.5 billion in 2024. \nBorn into a pioneer family that settled 2\,500 acres in San Rafael\, California\, in the 1860s\, Heidi’s reverence for the land runs deep. A proud Daughter of the American Revolution\, she continues this legacy of stewardship\, passing it on to her four children and seven grandchildren. \nHeidi’s memoir\, Breaking Ground (2020)\, chronicles her extraordinary journey\, serving as both an inspiring narrative and a call to action for global peace. Today\, Heidi lives in San Rafael with her husband\, Gary. She serves as Chairperson for the Smithsonian’s 250th Anniversary of America (2026)\, continuing her mission to bridge divides and plant the seeds of a more peaceful future. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture in Sage Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the beautiful Sage Chapel\, and snag a free lunch! \nEvery Tuesday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us!

SUMMARY:Theological Society: Andrew Judd
DESCRIPTION:Guest Scholar: \nA Conversation with Andrew Judd\nTo Laugh or to Cry? Why Genre Matters When Reading the Bible\nIf you’re watching a movie and see a crowd of people running around chaotically\, how do you respond? Do you laugh? Panic? Sit at the edge of your seat? We all intuitively understand that the answer to that question depends almost entirely on the genre of the movie. \nSimilarly\, we will respond differently to Scripture based on our understanding of the genre of a particular text. For example\, we’ll read Genesis 1 differently depending on whether we treat it as history\, a science report\, a poem\, or something else altogether. Or whether we think of the gospels as biographies or theological texts\, or see the book of Revelation as more like a political cartoon than a detailed timeline of the end of all things. \nWithout a clear understanding of genre\, we may hold naive or outdated views about how biblical texts were written and meant to be read. With a PhD in modern genre theory\, Dr. Andrew Judd of Ridley College in Melbourne Australia is just the expert we need to help us read the Bible the way it deserves. \nIf we are misunderstanding the genre of a particular text\, it’s like laughing during a thriller or panicking during a comedy: our responses are not in alignment with what the text is trying to communicate. Dr. Judd will help us navigate these misconceptions so we can engage Scripture more faithfully and grasp more fully what God is communicating through His Word. \nEmail to join \nAndrew Judd; Deputy Principal: Community Lecturer in Old Testament; Ridley College\, Melbourne\, Australia.\nAndrew is an ordained Anglican minister\, and serves as Deputy Principal and Lecturer in Old Testament at Ridley College. His PhD from Sydney University explored how Gadamer and modern literary genre theory helps us better understand our disagreements about what the Bible means. He is the author of Modern Genre Theory: An Introduction for Biblical Studies (Zondervan Academic\, 2024) and Playing with Scripture: Reading Contested Biblical Texts with Gadamer and Genre Theory (Routledge\, 2024). \nTHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY\nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. Members of the group seek to nurture discussion by listening attentively to one another\, guarding the length of our responses\, and avoiding diversions to pet issues unrelated to the subject at hand. In short\, we seek to embody a uniquely Christian form of intellectual hospitality that we can pass on to future generations.

SUMMARY:My Load is Easy: An Invitation to Cease Striving\, Building\, and Bettering
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nMy Load is Easy: An Invitation to Cease Striving\, Building\, and Bettering\nA conversation with Ephraim Radner; Professor Emeritus of Historical Theology \nMarch 10\, 2025\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom \nRegister Here \nOur generation pressures itself to meet abstract and unattainable standards of equality\, self-actualization\, and social improvement. We feel pulled toward one of two extremes: striving endlessly to create a perfect world and a perfect life\, or retreating into distraction or numbness when our efforts fail. We long for all things to be made new\, yet we struggle to tolerate ambiguity and wait patiently for God’s return. Instead of living with hope and eager expectation\, we carry a self-imposed and ever-increasing weight of anxiety and despair. \nEphraim Radner\, Emeritus Professor of Historical Theology at Wycliffe College\, University of Toronto\, offers a different way. Through the gifting of his Spirit\, God invites us to fully engage this present life—embracing both its moments of glorious astonishment and its seasons of suffering—while learning to rest in Christ’s easy yoke until His return. \nWhat if Jesus truly meant it when He said\, My load is easy? And what if it’s still true for us today? Join us for this powerful conversation about living lightly in a heavy world. \nEphraim Radner; Professor Emeritus of Historical Theology at Wycliffe College\, University of Toronto; PhD in Theology (Yale University)BA (Dartmouth College)\, MDiv (Yale Divinity School)\nPrior to his appointment as Professor of Historical Theology\, the Rev. Dr. Radner was rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension\, Pueblo\, Colorado. His range of ministerial experience includes Burundi\, where he worked as a missionary\, Haiti\, inner-city Cleveland\, and Connecticut. He has taught at seminaries in Connecticut and Colorado. In the Anglican Communion context he is a member of the Covenant Design Group. He is a violinist\, hiker\, and traveler. He is married to the Rev. Annette Brownlee and they are the parents of Hannah and Isaac. Radner’s research and teaching interests include pneumatology\, ecclesiology and ecumenism\, and biblical hermeneutics. Radner is currently co-editing a volume on Anglican figural reading of the Scriptures\, and working on a larger project involving Christian politics. \nEcclesiology: Ecclesial decision-making\, politics and ecumenism\, Scriptural hermeneutics and the theological categories of “time” and “history”\, The character of early modern Christian self-identity\, Pneumatology\, Contemporary Christian social experience\, Theological Interpretation of Scripture.
