DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

Her work explores how Christian belief—and other deeply held spiritual and ethical commitments—shape leadership\, vocation\, and scientific work. In her work to understand how scientists and people of faith think about science and religion questions\, Dr. Ecklund has surveyed over 40\,000 individuals in scientific and faith communities. She’s passionate about mentoring emerging scholars and helping communities navigate difference with wisdom\, charity\, and moral clarity. Elaine has a B.S.\, M.A. and PhD from Cornell University and has written several books about the science and faith interface\, most recently Why Science and Faith Need Each Other (Brazos)and Varieties of Atheism in Science (OUP). Dr. Ecklund is also a GCF Alum. Join us for this conversation\, a collaboration of the Graduate Christian Fellowship at Cornell and the Chesterton House Theological Society. \nDr. Elaine Howard Ecklund; Herbert S. Autrey Chair in Social Sciences\, Professor of Sociology; Director\, Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance\n\nElaine Howard Ecklund is a sociologist\, author\, and leader who explores how individuals and groups bring their deepest values—especially religious and ethical commitments—into their work\, leadership\, and public lives. She holds a Herbert S. Autrey Chair in Social Sciences at Rice University\, where she is a Professor of Sociology and directs the Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance. \nElaine has published nine books\, over 150 academic articles\, and led nearly twenty national and international research projects on religion\, science\, institutional culture\, and workplace religious diversity. Her work is widely recognized for revealing how pluralism—when understood and supported—can be an asset rather than a liability in professional life. \nKnown for building interdisciplinary teams and convening global gatherings\, Elaine brings clarity to topics often burdened by division rather than dialogue. \nHer current work focuses on religious diversity in the workplace\, mentoring as a model of institutional leadership\, and how faith and science intersect in public life. \nHer latest books include Religion in a Changing Workplace (OUP\, 2024) and Working for Better (IVP\, 2025) as well as Varieties of Atheism in Science (OUP\, 2021) and Why Science and Faith Need Each Other (Brazos\, 2020). \nShe received a Ph.D. from Cornell University\, where she was the recipient of the Graduate Student Baccalaureate Award for Academic Excellence and Community Service. In 2018\, she gave the Gifford Lecture at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and in 2023 received the Rice University Presidential Mentoring Award. Ecklund is interested in university leadership and in new approaches to mentoring. She is privileged to have worked with multiple postdoctoral fellows\, graduate students\, and undergraduate students in research\, and she is interested in supporting institutional growth\, both at Rice University and in academic organizations more broadly. To that end she served nine years as Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Sociology at Rice\, founded the Religion and Public Life Program at Rice in 2010 and served as director for 12 years\, was president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (SSSR)\, president of the Religious Research Association (RRA)\, and has served on various university evaluation and research committees. Laden with the modern idea of “equality\,” we awkwardly strive to make everyone the same\, measuring others’ experiences of life against our own—and unintentionally defining what it means to be human by our own standards. But what if that’s not only unfair\, but also wrong and harmful? \nMaybe people with disabilities need less energy spent on making them like us\, and more effort to welcome them as already fully human brothers and sisters created by God. Maybe it is their differences in our midst that help us understand our own humanity—reminding us that no one is an autonomous owner of their own life or master of their own fate\, but rather a beneficiary of God’s gratuitous gift of life\, to be given back to Him in gratitude. Reminding us that being human isn’t about subjective or performative metrics\, but rather something far deeper. Perhaps there are some (maybe many?) inequalities in this world that aren’t just unavoidable but are actually essential to understanding our humanity and what it means for all of us to become the Body of Christ. \nJoin us in welcoming John Swinton\, Professor of Practical Theology and Pastoral Care\, and Chair of Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen. Drawing from his journey from working as a Registered Mental Health Nurse to studying the theology of disability\, Rev. Professor Swinton will share his practical and theological insights to help us reflect together on a Christian theology of disability. \nJohn Swinton; Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies\, Professor in Practical Theology and Pastoral Care; School of Divinity\, History and Philosophy; King’s College University of Aberdeen\nJohn Swinton is Professor in Practical Theology and Pastoral Care and Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen. For more than a decade John worked as a registered mental health nurse. He also worked for a number of years as a hospital and community mental health Chaplain alongside of people with severe mental health challenges who were moving from the hospital into the community. In 2004\, he founded the University of Aberdeen’s Centre for Spirituality\, Health and Disability. He has published widely within the area of mental health\, dementia\, disability theology\, spirituality and healthcare\, end of life care\, qualitative research and pastoral care. John is the author of a number of monographs including Finding Jesus in the Storm: The spiritual lives of people with mental health challenges. (Eerdmans 2020) which won the Aldersgate prize for outstanding interdisciplinary work within theology. His book Dementia: Living in the memories of God won the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Ramsey Prize for excellence in theological writing. John is married with 5 children. John is also a musician. DESCRIPTION:Guest Scholar: \nA Conversation with Jon D. Levenson\nResurrection and Rest: What Are We Actually Looking Forward to?\nResurrection is the great hope of the Christian life–knowing that\, come what may\, we will one day enjoy an eternal rest in Christ that transcends our vexed and cussed experience of suffering\, sin\, and death in this world. And yet there is much popular confusion about the resurrection. One misconception is a common belief in the soul going to heaven with the physical body neglected or forgotten. Another is that the resurrection is a uniquely Christian innovation\, or something that only developed very late in Jewish thought when it is\, in fact\, a much older teaching in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible. \nProf. Jon Levenson\, Albert A. List Professor of Jewish Studies at Harvard University\, will guide us through our many questions and offer a richer\, more holistic perspective on the history and nature of resurrection. Drawing from Scripture and the Jewish tradition\, he will help dispel common misconceptions and introduce us to the profound intergenerational\, communal nature of the resurrected life. Along the way\, we will also see connections to the Sabbath and how we are invited into a weekly rest that foreshadows eternity and is also characterized by community and joy. \nEmail to join \nJon D. List Professor of Jewish Studies\, Harvard University.\nProf. Jon Levenson began teaching at Harvard in 1988\, having previously taught at the University of Chicago and at Wellesley College. His work concentrates on the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible\, including its reinterpretations in the “rewritten Bible” of Second Temple Judaism and rabbinic midrash. In addition\, one of his courses deals with the use of medieval Jewish commentaries for purposes of modern biblical exegesis\, and another focuses on central works of Jewish theology in the twentieth century. Levenson has a strong interest in the philosophical and theological issues involved in biblical studies\, especially the relationship of premodern modes of interpretation to modern historical criticism. Much of his work centers on the relationship of Judaism and Christianity\, both in antiquity and in modernity\, and he has long been active in Jewish-Christian dialogue. \nHis book Resurrection and the Restoration of Israel: The Ultimate Victory of the God of Life (Yale University Press\, 2006) won a National Jewish Book Award and the Biblical Archaeology Society Publication Award in the category of Best Book Relating to the Hebrew Bible published in 2005 or 2006. Choice\, a publication of the American Library Association\, listed Inheriting Abraham: The Legacy of the Patriarch in Judaism\, Christianity\, and Islam (Princeton University Press\, 2012) as one of the Outstanding Academic Titles for 2013. His book\, The Love of God: Divine Gift\, Human Gratitude\, and Mutual Faithfulness in Judaism\, was published in 2016 by Princeton University Press. His latest book is Israel’s Day of Light and Joy: The Origin\, Development\, and Enduring Meaning of the Jewish Sabbath (Eisenbrauns\, 2024). \nIn all his work\, Levenson’s emphasis falls on the close reading of texts for purposes of literary and theological understanding. \nTHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY\nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast! \nLOCATION CHANGE: This Friday\, April 18\, we are meeting on-campus at the Prayer Tent on Ho Plaza with donuts and coffee! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the historic Cornell House of Prayer (CHOP)\, and stay for some free pizza! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Thursday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us!

Why do we have these reactions to different sets of things? Can we trust our moral instincts? Audun Dahl\, a moral psychologist and David Lahti\, a Christian evolutionary biologist\, discuss what we can learn from their fields and how we might go about living with some of this knowledge. \nDavid Lahti; Associate Professor of Biology and Psychology\, CUNY\nDavid Lahti is an Associate Professor of Biology at Queens College\, City University of New York (CUNY)\, and is also affiliated with the doctoral faculty in Psychology and Biology at the CUNY Graduate Center. He leads the Behavior & Evolution Laboratory\, which focuses on learned behaviors in birds and humans\, cultural evolution\, rapid trait evolution\, and the development of morality and religion. \nLahti holds two PhDs: one in moral philosophy and philosophy of biology from the Whitefield Institute\, Oxford\, where he explored the contributions of science to understanding morality\, and another in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Michigan\, where he studied rapid evolution in African weaverbirds. His postdoctoral work included research on bird song development and human psychology from an evolutionary perspective. \nIn addition to his academic work\, Lahti integrates his scientific research with his Christian faith\, discussing topics such as cultural evolution and the interplay between science and religion. His lab consists of a diverse team working on projects ranging from ornithology to urban ecology. \nAudun Dahl; Professor of Psychology\, Cornell\nI am interested in development of morality across the lifespan. Every day\, from infancy to old age\, we encounter morally relevant events. We help or hurt another person\, or we witness others who help or hurt\, in both mundane and life-changing ways. As we develop\, and enter new social situations\, we encounter new rules for right and wrong behaviors. Religious texts spell out how to pray. Schools teach their students about how to use sources without plagiarizing. The abundance of moral and other principles prompts children and adults to determine\, again and again\, what makes for right and wrong ways of acting. \nThe Developmental Moral Psychology Lab studies how we reason\, judge\, feel\, and act around issues of right and wrong across the lifespan. We also study how morality develops through everyday social interactions\, starting in early childhood. We use a variety of methods—including laboratory experiments\, naturalistic observations\, structured interviews\, and surveys—to study infants\, children\, adolescents\, and adults from different communities. For instance\, we study how infants begin to help and harm others\, and how adults form judgments and decisions about complex issues\, such as academic integrity and moral dilemmas. Through this range of methods and age groups\, we seek to understand both the diversity and the unity of human morality. \nToni Alimi; (moderator) Assistant Professor of Classics\, Cornell \nMy research and teaching span ancient Roman philosophy (specializing in Lactantius and Augustine)\, intellectual history (focusing on freedom\, slavery\, law\, rule\, and authority)\, contemporary ethics and politics (idem)\, and philosophy of religion. My first book\, Slaves of God\, explicates Augustine’s reasons for justifying slavery and argues that slavery is a central theme in his broader ethics and politics. \nI’m in the early stages of research for a broader philosophical history of slavery (tentatively titled Slavery: A Philosophical History)\, which will trace the development of ideas of natural and retributive slavery from their ancient Greek and Roman provenances through late antiquity\, medieval and early modern Christianity\, into the antebellum United States. \nAs a Klarman Fellow (2021-2024)\, I am a postdoctoral associate in Classics with an affiliate appointment in Philosophy.
