After 8 months of diligent studying\, you will be able to translate through the entirety of 1 John! This immersive course is designed for anyone who wants to read the Bible in its original language but has struggled to find the structure or motivation to learn on their own. Whether the idea has felt too daunting or you’ve attempted self-study without success\, this course provides the guidance\, accountability\, and framework needed to build real proficiency in Koine Greek. \nLed by Jimmy Myers\, Senior Post-Doctoral Fellow at Chesterton House and former Greek instructor at Duke Divinity School\, the course transforms the memorization of grammar and vocabulary into something surprisingly joyful. Through thoughtful teaching methods—including rhythm\, repetition\, and even song—Jimmy creates an engaging learning environment that helps the language take root. Students commit to one hour of daily study and two hours of weekly instruction\, mirroring the steady discipline of physical training. \nWith consistent practice\, students will develop the foundational skills needed to begin reading scripture directly from the Greek text. DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Dr. Jimmy Myers and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning again on Monday\, February 2\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–8:30pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester.  \nDinner will be provided! \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. \napply today \nmore information \n

Bringing together people from varying faith traditions and beliefs\, they welcome all students from any background to join over a meal while discussing the big questions that transcend discipline and majors. Through small group discussion and large group reflections\, attendees read short reading selections together to generate conversation around the deepest questions of life and develop friendships within a vibrant and curious community. They can foster the sort of discussion where you leave thinking: these were the conversations I was hoping college would be about!

DESCRIPTION:Guest Scholar: \nA Conversation with Janet Soskice\nKnowing God through Naming: The Interconnection of Metaphysics and Worship in God’s Names\nWhat are humans doing when they name God? What are names of God for? How do names work? And how much do we need to know about God before we can name God in a coherent way? \nToo often theology has been led to fixate on metaphysical problems connected to the existence of God and the intelligibility of God’s attributes. The name “God” is treated as a common noun whose correct use requires possessing a coherent definition of what God is before naming God as “God.” The result is a theological practice of metaphysical reasoning which aims at proving God’s existence by reference to God’s attributes but is divorced from the function of naming God for the purpose of being in relation to God. \nBut what if “God” is not just a common noun but also a proper name? Isn’t naming just as much about addressing God in prayer as it is about referring to God metaphysically? Do we need to be in possession of a list of essential properties before we call upon the Name of the Lord? Or can human God-talk get on just fine by knowing the commonplace meaning “God” has in the community using it? \nFinally\, might reconceiving God’s attributes as “names” referring to but also addressing God recall theology to remember that metaphysical reflection and devotional practice are meant to be interconnected in the task of theology? \nJoin the Theological Society as  we wrestle through these matters and more with Cornell alumnus\, Janet Soskice\, who is presently the William K. Warren Distinguished Research Professor of Catholic Theology at Duke Divinity School. Prior to her appointment at Duke\, Prof. Soskice spent more than 30 years on the Faculty of Divinity at Cambridge University. She has authored many notable works\, including Metaphor and Religious Language (Oxford: 1984) and most recently Naming God (Cambridge: 2023). She was featured on the “Best Book of the Year” lists in The Washington Post and The Christian Science Monitor for her book Sisters of Sinai (London: 2009). \n\nEmail to join \nJanet Soskice\, William K. Warren Distinguished Research Professor of Catholic Theology\nDr. Soskice’s work lies at the intersection of Christian theology and philosophy. She has been particularly interested in questions of method and the Doctrine of God: religious language\, metaphysics and epistemology\, narrative and genre\, doctrine of creation\, women and religion\, beauty and western art\, science and religion\, and theological writing. Her present large project\, bringing almost all of these together\, is on “Naming God.” For over 30 years\, Professor Soskice was on the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge\, where she is professor emerita of philosophical theology. She is a fellow emerita and past president of Jesus College Cambridge. Her books include Metaphor and Religious Language (Oxford\, 1984); The Kindness of God (Oxford\, 2007); joint editor of Creation and the God of Abraham (Cambridge\, 2010); and Naming God: Addressing the Divine in Philosophy\, Theology and Scripture (Cambridge\, 2023). Her book Sisters of Sinai: How Two Lady Adventurers Discovered the Lost Gospels (London: Chatto and New York: Knopf\, 2009) was read as Book of the Week on BBC Radio 4 and was in the “Best Book of the Year” lists of The Washington Post and The Christian Science Monitor. Dr. Soskice is a past president of both the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain and the Society for the Study of Theology\, and has been a Eugene McCarthy Visiting Professor at the Gregorian University in Rome and president of the Cambridge University Catholic Association. She is a member of the English and Welsh Anglican/ Roman Catholic Committee and takes part in Christian/Muslim dialogue. \n\nTHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY\nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. Members of the group seek to nurture discussion by listening attentively to one another\, guarding the length of our responses\, and avoiding diversions to pet issues unrelated to the subject at hand. In short\, we seek to embody a uniquely Christian form of intellectual hospitality that we can pass on to future generations.

Lewis \nThe Abolition of Man discusses why we shouldn’t always listen to only reason and cut out our emotions. Lewis argues that reason without emotion there is not a reality. He debunks arguments that the purist form of reason is instinct\, that benevolent actions will be found through pursuing science\, and that science will be the best moral compass for mankind to follow. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Tuesday! DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Dr. Jimmy Myers and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning again on Monday\, February 2\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–9pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester.  \nDinner will be provided! \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. \napply today \nmore information \n
