Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nWhy You Should Say No to Digital Technology: A Theological Case for Techno-Pessimism\nA conversation with Brad East\, Associate Professor of Theology at Abilene Christian University\nOctober 27th\, 2025\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom \nregister here \nIt happens almost every year\, if not every quarter: a new technology drops\, a celebration ensues\, and the public begins to consume\, exchanging models now passé for the next iteration that has cleaned up the spoils and spots plaguing the old. Each innovation comes with its promises of progress and advance: more speed\, more intelligence\, more connectivity\, more immersion\, more time for pleasure\, more escape from the wreckage in the world. \nThere is so much preoccupation with what could be that we rarely stop and wonder whether it should be. What if digital technologies\, and the accelerationist impulse underlying their development\, aren’t good for human beings? What does human flourishing realistically look like? Does technology advance this flourishing? How do these questions weigh on the technology industry in our fast-paced\, advancement driven world? \nAnd so it is worth pausing to wonder: Is digital technology good for human beings and communities? What are humans made for? What is the goal of immersion in technology\, and how far does it square with the goal of human life? \nThese are some of the questions we will explore as we welcome public theologian and tech-critic\, Brad East (PhD\, Yale University). Brad is an associate professor of theology at Abilene Christian University in Abilene\, Texas. He has authored four books\, and his most recent book on technology is soon to be released. \nBrad East; Associate Professor of Theology at Abilene Christian University\nBrad East (PhD\, Yale University) is an associate professor of theology in the College of Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University in Abilene\, Texas. He is the editor of Robert Jenson’s The Triune Story: Collected Essays on Scripture (Oxford University Press\, 2019) and the author of four books: The Doctrine of Scripture (Cascade\, 2021)\, The Church’s Book: Theology of Scripture in Ecclesial Context (Eerdmans\, 2022)\, The Church: A Guide to the People of God (Lexham\, 2024)\, and Letters to a Future Saint: Foundations of Faith for the Spiritually Hungry (Eerdmans\, 2024). DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the historic Cornell House of Prayer (CHOP)\, and stay for some free pizza! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Thursday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us!

DESCRIPTION:Join as you can for our Just Show Up book club! \nJust Show Up (JSU) Book Club is a book club without homework where people gather to read\, listen\, and discuss great books together.  No need to commit to joining every week\, the beauty of JSU book clubs is that you can jump in at any point and there is no preparation required! Participants can join in-person or via Zoom. \nWe will meet every Wednesday at 115 The Knoll\, beginning on September 3rd.  \nOur first book of the year is: Christian History in Seven Sentences\, by Jennifer Woodruff Tait. \nConsisting of 7 chapters\, each “sentence” is an excerpt from a historical document that was written at a pivotal moment in Christian history. Beginning with the edict of Milan in 313AD\, which legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire\, continuing through the Nicene Creed\, the 95 Theses which kicked off the Protestant reformation\, and ending with the second Vatican council in the 1960s\, this book is an approachable introduction to the generations of Christians who have come before us. \nREGISTER HERE! \nJoin us for dessert at 115 The Knoll for a time of reading and discussion together! \nWe hope to see you there!
