SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture at CHOP
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the historic Cornell House of Prayer (CHOP)\, and stay for some free pizza! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\, we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Thursday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us!

SUMMARY:When Computers “Create”
DESCRIPTION:When Computers “Create”: AI-Generated Art\, Authorship\, and the Imago Dei\n\nA conversation with Ruth L. Okediji\, Professor of Law at Harvard Law School \n\nFebruary 24th\, 2025\n5:30 pm EST\nPhysical Sciences Building 120 or via Zoom\n+ Reception to follow \nRegister here to join via Zoom \nIf ChatGPT can write a book\, what are the implications for human authors and their works? If MidJourney can create an image\, where does that leave graphic designers and artists? These questions draw us into the deep and complex relationships between our human identity and our intelligence and creativity. After all\, we want to believe we have a special divine spark of creativity within us. But it can be increasingly difficult to hold that belief amidst the ever-advancing sophistication of AI modeling that seems “more perfect” than those born of the Imago Dei. \nHarvard Law Professor Ruth L. Okediji can help us attend to these questions. As a leading scholar in intellectual property law and appointed member of the American Bar Association President’s Taskforce on AI and the Law\, she is among a small and distinguished group of experts studying creativity\, artistry\, and ownership of ideas and creative products. Join us for an evening of discussion on what happens when computers can “create.” \nRuth L. Okediji; Professor of Law\, Harvard Law School\, Co-Director of Berkman Klein Center\n\nRuth L. Okediji is the Jeremiah Smith\, Jr. Professor of Law at Harvard Law School\, Co-Director of Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society\, Founding Faculty Director of the Harvard Program on Biblical Law & Christian Legal Studies\, and Founding Faculty Director of the Center for the Study of African Societies and Economies (CSASE). Professor Okediji teaches contracts\, intellectual property (IP)\, Law and Development\, AI in the Just Society\, and courses on Biblical Law. Her research and scholarship examine innovation policy\, the digital economy\, and global knowledge governance. She has authored an extensive array of influential articles\, commissioned papers\, and book chapters on the relationship between intellectual property\, innovation\, and human wellbeing. \nProfessor Okediji was a member of the U.S. National Academies Board on Science\, Technology and Policy Committee on the Impact of Copyright Policy on Innovation in the Digital Era\, and in 2021 she completed service as Co-Chair of the National Academies Board on Science\, Technology\, and Economic Policy Committee on Advancing Commercialization from the Federal Laboratories. She advises governments and international organizations on a variety of issues at the intersection of innovation policy\, AI\, and human development. \nOver the course of her career\, Professor Okediji has received numerous awards and distinctions for teaching\, advising\, and mentoring. These include “Professor Most Likely to Go Beyond the Call of Duty” and the Student Bar Association’s “Outstanding Professor Award.” She is a two- time recipient of the Harvard Law School Women’s Law Association “Shatter the Ceiling” Award. She has been named one of the 50 most influential figures in the field of intellectual property by Managing IP and she received the 2019 Public Knowledge IP3 Award. In 2023 she was awarded the Barry Prize for Distinguished Intellectual Achievement by the American Academy of Sciences and Letters. \nProfessor Okediji served as an expert to the Africa Group and lead negotiator for the 2013 Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind\, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled. In 2024 she served as the Government of Nigeria’s expert negotiator for the WIPO Diplomatic Conference on Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge. \nProfessor Okediji serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of World Intellectual Property Law and the Journal of International Economic Law. SUMMARY:Protecting Indigenous Peoples’ Innovation: New Actors and New Issues in International Intellectual Property
DESCRIPTION:Protecting Indigenous Peoples’ Innovation: New Actors and New Issues in International Intellectual Property\n\nA conversation with Ruth L. Okediji\, Professor of Law at Harvard Law School \n\nFebruary 24th\, 2025\n12:10 pm EST\nMyron Taylor Hall 182\n*Lunch will be provided; registration required \nIn- Person Student Registration \nNon-Student Registration (in person or via Zoom) \nRuth L. Okediji\, the Jeremiah Smith\, Jr.\, Professor of Law and Co-Director of Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center on Professor of Law at Harvard Law School\, recently served as the lead expert negotiator for a historic negotiation at the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization. The result of more than a decade of negotiations is a ground-breaking intellectual property treaty that recognizes the contributions of Indigenous People and Local Communities (IPLC’s) in the global innovation system. \nWhat ethical\, economic\, and cultural factors affect how we steward humanity’s capacity for creativity? The default utilitarian approach that underpins intellectual property law has historically excluded non-traditional forms and practices of innovation. These concerns operate in parallel with other complex tensions\, including indigenous rights\, biodiversity\, sovereignty over genetic resources\, ecological sustainability\, and climate change more broadly. \nOkediji draws personal inspiration from her Christian faith in tackling these challenges\, and her story illustrates how faith convictions – and the worldview it promotes – can shape and interact with policy and legal frameworks in advancing human flourishing. \nCo-Sponsored by Christian Legal Society at Cornell\, Cornell United Religious Works\, and Cornell’s Office of Spirituality and Meaning-Making. \nRuth L. Okediji; Professor of Law\, Harvard Law School\, Co-Director of Berkman Klein Center\nRuth L. SUMMARY:Reigniting the Revolution: How Acts can help us revitalize our imaginations and way of living
DESCRIPTION:Guest Scholar: \nA Conversation with C. Kavin Rowe\nReigniting the Revolution: How Acts can help us revitalize our imaginations and way of living\nIf asked to name a world-changing political document\, popular answers might include the Declaration of Independence\, the Magna Carta\, or the Emancipation Proclamation. Few\, if any\, would think to name the New Testament book of Acts. But renowned New Testament scholar and theologian C. Kavin Rowe argues otherwise. \nOften viewed as a text of political appeasement or harmlessness\, Kavin suggests that Acts is actually a “highly charged and theologically sophisticated political document” that presents a radically counter-cultural and culture-forming way of life. In World Upside Down: Reading Acts in the Graeco-Roman Age\, Kavin explores how early Christians embodied an entirely alternate way to live in and engage with the world. In Christianity’s Surprise\, he further examines how these revolutionary early Christian communities redefined what it means to be human. \nIn a time when the world can feel disenchanted\, Kavin observes that we “are hungry for a revitalization of our imaginations and practices that show the world who we are and why we exist.” In this conversation\, we’ll rediscover the revolutionary nature of the earliest Christian communities and how that might reignite a transformative spark within us. \nInterested in attending? Email us to be added to our guest list! \nEmail to Join \n \nC. Kavin Rowe; Vice Dean of Faculty and the George Washington Ivey Distinguished Professor of New Testament; at\nDuke Divinity School\nC. Kavin Rowe is the vice dean of the faculty and the George Washington Ivey Distinguished Professor of New Testament. The third volume of his collected essays has recently been published as Studies in Luke\, Acts\, and Paul (Eerdmans\, 2024). The second volume\, Method\, Context\, and Meaning in New Testament Studies\, was published early this year (Eerdmans\, 2024)\, and the first volume\, Leading Christian Communities\, in 2023 (Eerdmans). Rowe is the author of four other books: Christianity’s Surprise: A Sure and Certain Hope (Abingdon\, 2020)\, One True Life: the Stoics and Early Christians as Rival Traditions (Yale University Press\, 2016)\, World Upside Down: Reading Acts in the Graeco-Roman Age (Oxford University Press\, 2009\, paperback 2010)\, and Early Narrative Christology (de Gruyter\, 2006\, repr. Baker Academic\, 2009). He has published dozens of articles and essays\, and co-edited The Word Leaps the Gap (Eerdmans\, 2008) and Rethinking the Unity and Reception of Luke and Acts (University of South Carolina Press\, 2010). He is on the editorial board of several international peer-review journals and has also frequently written articles for faithandleadership.com \nRowe has been a Fulbright Scholar\, Regional Scholar for the Society of Biblical Literature\, chair of the Society’s Southeastern Region New Testament section\, president of the Society’s Southeastern Region\, and was elected to the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas. He was awarded a Lilly Faculty Fellowship\, a Christian Faith and Life Grant from the Louisville Institute\, the John Templeton Prize for Theological Promise\, the Paul J. Achtemeier Award\, and a Distinguished Scholars grant from the McDonald Agape Foundation. \n\nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. Members of the group seek to nurture discussion by listening attentively to one another\, guarding the length of our responses\, and avoiding diversions to pet issues unrelated to the subject at hand. In short\, we seek to embody a uniquely Christian form of intellectual hospitality that we can pass on to future generations.

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture at the Knoll
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast on the Knoll! \n \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us!

SUMMARY:Online Course with Vivek Mathew & Ryan O'Dowd
DESCRIPTION:Equality in the Hot Seat: A Promising Idea That Fails to Deliver\nOnline course with Dr. Vivek Mathew & Rev. Dr. Ryan O’Dowd\nJanuary 6th\, 7th\, 20th\, 21st\n8pm – 9pm ET\nRemotely via Zoom \nRegister Here \nThe Chesterton House on-campus Logos seminar discussions are an award-winning and unique educational experience in Christian higher education\, guiding students through flashpoints of contemporary cultural debates in conversation with historic Christian intellectual traditions. This course will give our online-only audience an abbreviated taste of those discussions\, specially geared for our alumni and supporters around the world. The discussions will be led by our Executive Director Vivek Mathew and Academic Director Ryan O’Dowd. \nThis year\, our thematic center has been equality. The idea of equality has modern incarnations that attempt to protect human dignity and achieve a more just distribution of created goods within a world of fallen creatures and broken economic systems. But how did this modern idea of equality come about? How did it come to take center place in our moral ecology? And how does it compare with older Biblical ideals\, and historic Christian intellectual foundations? This short course will briefly survey how equality in its modern guise became the reigning starting point for guiding moral and political thought\, from both within Christian internal debates as well as secular challenges to Christian ethics. The course will bring together a combination of Biblical passages and theological and philosophical readings for our reflection\, from patristics to contemporary analytic philosophers and theologians\, including both Christian and non-Christian perspectives. It does not aim to settle final questions or positions in the debates\, but provide an intellectual and conceptual framework to orient them. \nThis online-only course will have a limited number of registration spots\, so register today if you are interested. \nRegister Here
