These apocalyptic visions result in the reasonable call for caution and serious reflection on how AI shapes human flourishing. \nBut what if these dramatic threats are massively overstated? What if that future is far less likely than we fear? Could it be that\, in the fervor of it all\, we’ve forgotten some crucial things: that AI does not evolve on its own but has to be built\, and that human beings remain responsible for what they create? \nMight this doomsdaying be keeping us from exploring real benefits for real people: freeing them from menial and life-denying work\, improving care for those vulnerable to seizure\, and perhaps one day preventing most diseases? \nAnd\, what if the most harmful effects of AI are actually more hidden\, less acknowledged issues related to mental health\, addiction\, and loneliness? \nIn other words\, we need to think less about the visions of apocalyptic doomsayers and more about this human side of digital tech. \nJoin us as we welcome MIT Professor and AI researcher Roz Picard to Chesterton Perspectives. She is the author of the book Affective Computing and co-author of hundreds of peer-reviewed science and engineering articles in artificial intelligence\, digital health\, affective computing\, and human-computer interaction. An inventor on over 100 worldwide and US patents\, she is co-founder and chief scientist of Empatica\, providing FDA-cleared digital biomarkers and medical quality data and devices for clinical trials and research studies\, and helping people with epilepsy and Parkinson’s. Picard is also co-founder of Affectiva\, now part of Smart Eye AB. She is a popular speaker with a TED talk of over 2 million views. And might not the contrast between so-called “natural” and “human innovation” be not only misleading but wrong? Just try and name one thing you can do without technology! (Language is a technology\, by the way). \nOf course\, today’s critics of technological development want to worry us. Tech isn’t neutral\, we hear again and again. These devices are forming us into something less than human and destroying our life in community with one another. Even worse\, large-language models are forming a world where the line between human and machines is increasingly indistinguishable. \nYet our modern technological developments have led us to forget that every ancient civilization has faced major technological disruptions of their own. And many of these cultures have left behind wisdom traditions that offer a fresh perspective and settle our worries. Join us in dialogue with the Rev. Dr. Ryan O’Dowd\, an Old Testament scholar whose expertise is in wisdom traditions in the Ancient Near East\, who will help us reflect on the wisdom of tech. \n. \nRyan O’Dowd; Old Testament Scholar\, University of Liverpool (PhD)\, Senior Academic Advisor at Chesterton House\nRyan O’Dowd is the Pastor of Christ Church of Atlanta and Senior Academic Advisor at Chesterton House. Ryan started volunteering with Chesterton House in 2010 while serving on Air Force active duty at Cornell ROTC. He briefly served on the governing board before joining the staff in 2013. His academic research focuses on biblical wisdom and law and their intersection with Christian ethics. He has written several essays and book chapters as well as five books on topics related to biblical law and wisdom literature including “The Preacher’s Hebrew Commentary on Deuteronomy” (Hendrickson\, 2024) and “Proverbs” (Zondervan\, 2017). Ryan is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy (1994)\, Reformed Theological Seminary\, and the University of Liverpool (PhD). Each innovation comes with its promises of progress and advance: more speed\, more intelligence\, more connectivity\, more immersion\, more time for pleasure\, more escape from the wreckage in the world. \nThere is so much preoccupation with what could be that we rarely stop and wonder whether it should be. What if digital technologies\, and the accelerationist impulse underlying their development\, aren’t good for human beings? What does human flourishing realistically look like? Does technology advance this flourishing? How do these questions weigh on the technology industry in our fast-paced\, advancement driven world? \nAnd so it is worth pausing to wonder: Is digital technology good for human beings and communities? What are humans made for? What is the goal of immersion in technology\, and how far does it square with the goal of human life? \nThese are some of the questions we will explore as we welcome public theologian and tech-critic\, Brad East (PhD\, Yale University). Brad is an associate professor of theology at Abilene Christian University in Abilene\, Texas. He has authored four books\, and his most recent book on technology is soon to be released. \nBrad East; Associate Professor of Theology at Abilene Christian University\nBrad East (PhD\, Yale University) is an associate professor of theology in the College of Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University in Abilene\, Texas. He is the editor of Robert Jenson’s The Triune Story: Collected Essays on Scripture (Oxford University Press\, 2019) and the author of four books: The Doctrine of Scripture (Cascade\, 2021)\, The Church’s Book: Theology of Scripture in Ecclesial Context (Eerdmans\, 2022)\, The Church: A Guide to the People of God (Lexham\, 2024)\, and Letters to a Future Saint: Foundations of Faith for the Spiritually Hungry (Eerdmans\, 2024).
