SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture in Sage Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the beautiful Sage Chapel\, and snag a free lunch! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Tuesday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us!

SUMMARY:Physics for the Common Good: A Conversation with Catherine Crouch
DESCRIPTION:Physics for the Common Good\nA Conversation with Catherine Crouch\, Professor of Physics\, Swarthmore College\nNovember 18th\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at Willard Straight Hall 404 (Browsing Library)\n+ dessert reception \nRegister Here\n*Registration Required \nMight there be unintended consequences to our increasingly STEM-focused curriculum today? But might there also be benefits to this STEM focus that we had not realized? In short\, the natural sciences study the universe\, but they also play an important and undervalued role in students’ formation as persons. \nProfessor Catherine Crouch\, Chair of Physics and Astronomy at Swarthmore College\, has made a life of studying physics education. Her research has led her to ponder ways to improve instruction in physics but also into questions about the existential and even spiritual role the natural sciences play in our lives. \nCatherine Crouch; Professor of Physics\, Swarthmore College\nCatherine Hirshfeld Crouch is a Professor of Physics at Swarthmore College\, where she has taught since 2003 and is serving as Department Chair for 2021-2026. She was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2021 for her work in physics education\, spanning research\, curriculum and pedagogy\, and institutional leadership. \nDr. Crouch has extensive expertise in both materials physics and pedagogical best practices for college and university science. She earned her PhD. at Harvard University studying electrical transport in nanofabricated quantum dots\, and then remained at Harvard in a dual postdoctoral fellowship in materials physics and physics education with Eric Mazur. \nShe has published more than thirty peer-reviewed articles in both experimental physics and physics education research and has involved more than thirty Swarthmore undergraduate students in research. She has won five National Science Foundation grants for physics education work as PI or co-PI. She served in the Chair line of the American Physical Society’s Forum on Education for 2019-22 and co-chaired its Committee on Education for 2022. \nIn 2017\, Dr. Crouch co-founded and served as the first faculty director of Swarthmore’s Collaborative STEM Inclusive Excellence initiatives to expand support and resources for students in the sciences during the regular academic year. She led this effort until becoming physics department chair in July 2021. She also taught in the Swarthmore Summer Scholars program during summers 2016 and 2017 for underrepresented and first-generation students in the sciences.

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

SUMMARY:Just Show Up Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join as you can for our Just Show Up book club! \nJust Show Up (JSU) Book Club is a book club without homework where people gather to read\, listen\, and discuss great books together.  No need to commit to joining every week\, the beauty of JSU book clubs is that you can jump in at any point and there is no preparation required! \nWe will meet every Tuesday at 115 The Knoll. This semester\, beginning on September 10\, we will be reading “Eat This Book” by Eugene Peterson. \nREGISTER HERE! \n“Eugene Peterson is convinced that the way we read the Bible is as important as that we read it. Do we read the Bible for information about God and salvation\, for principles and “truths” that we can use to live better? Or do we read it in order to listen to God and respond in prayer and obedience? \nThe second part of Peterson’s momentous five-volume work on spiritual theology\, Eat This Book challenges us to read the Scriptures on their terms\, as God’s revelation\, and to live them as we read them. With warmth and wisdom Peterson offers greatly needed\, down-to-earth counsel on spiritual reading.” (The Gospel Coalition) \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Singing the Blues: A Moral Alternative to Vengeance and Apathy?
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nSinging the Blues: A Moral Alternative to Vengeance and Apathy?\nA conversation with Angel Adams Parham\, Associate Professor of Sociology and senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture (IASC) at the University of Virginia\nNovember 11\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom \nRegister Here \nMany of America’s most tense public battles over the last decade hinge on disputes about rival readings of history. Yet we have irreconcilable accounts of what happened and why\, let alone who is responsible and how to move forward. These historical stalemates foster an increasingly polarized culture. \nBut what if our disputes brought together not only what we think happened in the past\, but how and why we choose to remember it? A fuller exploration uncovers the way history is shaped by our moral imagination\, bringing together emotions such as anger and optimism. As a sociologist and trenchant commenter on the ways social communities shape their own stories\, Angel Adams Parham looks to a deeper vision of history that goes beyond simplistic stories. \nCould we “sing the blues” as Angel Adams Parham phrases it? A different way of understanding history could help us move forward in hope without forgetting the sins of our past. \nAngel Adams Parham; Associate Professor of Sociology and Senior Fellow\, Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia\nAngel Adams Parham is Associate Professor of Sociology\, senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture\, and Associate Director for the major in Political and Social Thought at the University of Virginia. Through her research in historical sociology\, she engages in inquiry that examines the past in order to better understand how to live well in the present and envision wisely for the future. Her first book\, American Routes: Racial Palimpsests and the Transformation of Race (Oxford\, 2017)\, received several awards. Her latest book\, co-authored with Anika Prather\, was published in 2022 and is entitled The Black Intellectual Tradition: Reading Freedom in Classical Literature. Parham has published articles on the intersection of Black writers and classical liberal education in popular outlets including the Washington Post\, Wall Street Journal\, Public Discourse\, Comment Magazine\, The Hedgehog Review\, and Common Good Magazine. Her work finds expression in the community in her capacity as the co-founder and executive director of Nyansa Classical Community\, an educational organization which provides curricula and programming designed to connect with students from diverse backgrounds\, inviting them to take part in the Great Conversation\, cultivate the moral imagination\, and pursue truth\, goodness\, and beauty. Parham has been a member of the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton\, as well as the recipient of a Fulbright grant. She received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University and completed her doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

SUMMARY:Logos Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Rev. Dr. Ryan O’Dowd and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning on Monday\, September 9th\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 7:30pm–9pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester. \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. \nApply Today!

Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

SUMMARY:You Are What You Scroll | Israel Soong
DESCRIPTION:You Are What You Scroll: Why Tech Is Not Value-Neutral\nIsrael Soong\,  former Director of Cyber Policy at the White House National Security Council\nOctober 24rd\, 2024\n5:30 pm EST Reception with hearty hors d’oeuvres to follow\nWillard Straight Hall 404 or via Zoom \nRegister here to join via Zoom \nHow does technology shape us? Should it be considered “value-neutral”\, a mere individual preference? Just as some like to read e-books and others enjoy the tangible feel of paper. But\, technology is not created in a moral vacuum\, its design and possible uses innately reflect the values and goals of its designers. This raises difficult questions about how we may need to bring in both ethics and larger conceptions of a human person and the meaning of life to think about whether emerging technologies lead to justice and happiness or addiction\, exploitation\, and corruption. As National Security Council Director for Cyber Policy\, Izzy Soong has thought about these issues from the point of view of a technologist\, a policy analyst\, an advisor\, as well as a practicing Christian who is involved in the intersection of tech and faith. Join us as we consider how old wisdom meets new challenges. \nCo-Sponsored by the Cornell Office of Spirituality and Meaning-Making \nIsrael (Izzy) Soong; Former Director of Cyber Policy at the White House National Security Council\n\nIsrael Soong is former Director of Cyber Policy for the White House National Security Council. While at the NSC\, Israel coordinated inter-agency efforts to counter nation-state cyber threats to the United States critical infrastructure\, and efforts to bolster the cyber security of allied and partner nations in the Indo-Pacific. Before entering government service\, Israel was a senior vice president for strategy at a software company in the United States\, and regional vice president for an IT security company based in Asia and the Middle East. He has been a part-time seminary student at Westminster Theological Seminary\, and has written for The Gospel Coalition and for the Tennent School of Theology.  He graduated from Cornell with a BS in policy analysis in 1996 and obtained a JD from Harvard Law School and an MPA from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard in 2001.  He enjoys kayaking\, biking\, and hiking Civil War battlefields.

SUMMARY:Can Government Be Moral? Seeking Faith & Wisdom in International Relations
DESCRIPTION:Can Government Be Moral?\nSeeking Faith & Wisdom in International Relations\nIsrael Soong\,  former Director of Cyber Policy at the White House National Security Council\nOctober 23rd\, 2024\n6:00 pm EST Reception with hearty hors d’oeuvres to follow\nPhysical Sciences Building 120 or via Zoom \nRegister here to join via Zoom \nWith our round-the-clock gaze on the world\, we can’t help but ask questions about the moral nature of government. One historic answer to this question is to say that government has no values\, only its own self-interest to preserve a nation. Here\, Christians have no responsibility in the public square. A second answer is that Christians should seek to compel the government to conform with Christian moral values. If one option too quickly shirks moral responsibility\, the second naively over-idealizes it. Might there be another\, more historically Christian way to engage our Christian political responsibility among the realities of a post-Christian fallen world? \nIsrael (Izzy) Soong; Former Director of Cyber Policy at the White House National Security Council\nIsrael Soong is former Director of Cyber Policy for the White House National Security Council.
