SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture in Sage Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the beautiful Sage Chapel\, and snag a free lunch! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Tuesday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us! \n

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. Members of the group seek to nurture discussion by listening attentively to one another\, guarding the length of our responses\, and avoiding diversions to pet issues unrelated to the subject at hand. In short\, we seek to embody a uniquely Christian form of intellectual hospitality that we can pass on to future generations.

SUMMARY:Fenggang Yang
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton House Presents: \nThe Rise of Christianity in Modernizing China\nAnd its Challenges to Sociological Theories\nApril 11th\, 2024\n7pm – 8:30pm ET\nReception to follow\nPhysical Sciences Building 120\nor remotely via Zoom (Registration Required) \nRegister Here \nDoes Christianity have a chance of surviving the age of modernization? The rise of Christianity in China is one of the biggest stories of religious change in the modern era. According to the dominant secularization paradigm\, Christianity and other organized religions should be shrinking in modernized countries like China. But today China is proving this paradigm to be wrong. Purdue University Professor Fenggang Yang is an expert in the sociology of religion in the Global East and has studied these trends for many decades. He argues that\, while this growth might be unexpected\, it is not historically unprecedented for Christianity to flourish in the soil of opposition. Join us as Professor Yang highlights the challenges this poses for widely accepted sociological theories. \nCo-Sponsored by Cornell Levinson Program in China and Asia-Pacific Studies \nFenggang Yang; Professor of Sociology & Director of Center on Religion and the Global East; Purdue University\nFenggang Yang is Professor of Sociology\, the founding Director of the Center on Religion and the Global East at Purdue University\, West Lafayette\, Indiana. He is the founding Editor of the Review of Religion and Chinese Society. He has been elected and served as the President of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (2014-15) and the first President of the East Asian Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (2018-2020). His research focuses on the sociology of religion\, religious change in China and immigrant religion in the United States. He is the author of Atlas of Religion in China: Social and Geographical Contexts (2018)\, Religion in China: Survival and Revival under Communist Rule (2012)\, and Chinese Christians in America: Conversion\, Assimilation\, and Adhesive Identities (1999)\, and the co-editor of more than ten books. \n

SUMMARY:Chesterton Perspectives: Danielle Treweek
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nUnraveling the Meaning of Singleness\n\nA Conversation with Danielle Treweek Christian Theological Researcher\, Author\, and Speaker\n \n\n\nMarch 25th\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom\n\n\nRegister Here \n\n\n\nSingleness: the unloved waystation on the road to marriage. Mainstream Christian figures from Tim Keller and Albert Mohler to James Dobson and John MacArthur would have us believe that marriage is the preferred state for everyone\, singleness the unfortunate consolation prize or the waiting stage before something “better”. But\, what if there’s something “better” about singleness that gets overlooked today? Christian scripture and tradition teach us that singleness and marriage are equal callings with their own riches and pains and with complimentary roles foreshadowing the eternal life that awaits us. Dani Treweek proposes that we turn from these shallow and contemporary caricatures to retrieve a richer and fuller sense of what it means to be human\, both here and in eternity. \nDanielle Treweek; Christian Theological Researcher\, Author\, and Speaker\nDanielle Treweek\, Rev’d Dr Danielle Treweek (BA\, B.Div (Hons)\, PhD)\, is an ordained deacon within the Sydney Anglican Diocese. After serving as an assistant minister at St Matthias Anglican Church\, Centennial Park\, she completed doctoral research into theology of singleness for the contemporary church through St Mark’s National Theological Centre in Canberra. She is the author of The Meaning of Singleness\, is commencing commentary work on 1 & 2 Thessalonians for Hodder & Stoughton and writes for publications including Christianity Today\, Themelios\, Mere Orthodoxy\, and ABC Religion & Ethics. She is the founding director of Single Minded Ministry\, teaches at Youthworks College in Sydney\, and is a member of the Doctrine Commission within the Sydney Anglican Diocese in which she also serves as Diocesan Research Officer. \nRegister Here
