SUMMARY:Just Show Up Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join as you can for our Just Show Up book club! \nJust Show Up (JSU) Book Club is a book club without homework where people gather to read\, listen\, and discuss great books together.  No need to commit to joining every week\, the beauty of JSU book clubs is that you can jump in at any point and there is no preparation required! \nWe will meet every Tuesday at 115 The Knoll. This semester\, beginning on September 10\, we will be reading “Eat This Book” by Eugene Peterson. \nREGISTER HERE! \n“Eugene Peterson is convinced that the way we read the Bible is as important as that we read it. Do we read the Bible for information about God and salvation\, for principles and “truths” that we can use to live better? Or do we read it in order to listen to God and respond in prayer and obedience? \nThe second part of Peterson’s momentous five-volume work on spiritual theology\, Eat This Book challenges us to read the Scriptures on their terms\, as God’s revelation\, and to live them as we read them. With warmth and wisdom Peterson offers greatly needed\, down-to-earth counsel on spiritual reading.” (The Gospel Coalition) \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture in Sage Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the beautiful Sage Chapel\, and snag a free lunch! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Tuesday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us!

SUMMARY:Puncturing the Myth of Equality
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nPuncturing the Myth of Equality\nA conversation with Brad Littlejohn\, Fellow at Ethics and Public Policy Center\nSeptember 30\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nNo ideal has dominated modern political thought more than equality. Yet apart from political philosophers and economists\, few of us give equality any serious thought. We tacitly accept inequalities that seem necessary for society to function: parents and children\, teachers and students\, politicians and citizens\, etc. We even celebrate massive inequalities between ourselves and others like olympic athletes\, musicians\, doctors\, and poets. And yet\, we appeal to equality to protect the common dignity of being made in the image of God. When should we push towards greater equality\, and when should we instead accept hierarchical inequalities and celebrate difference?\n\nJoin us as we host the political theologian Brad Littlejohn who will help us navigate our way through myths and merits of equality.\n\n\n\n\nBrad Littlejohn; Fellow at Ethics and Public Policy Center\nBrad Littlejohn (Ph.D\, University of Edinburgh) is a Fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC)\, where he helms a project for renewing an authentically Protestant contribution to American civic renewal. He is also the founder and President Emeritus of The Davenant Institute\, where for ten years he helped create resources and courses to form Christian leaders in wisdom to navigate our increasingly challenging cultural moment. A leading voice in Protestant ethics and political thought\, he is the author or editor of nineteen books\, including The Peril and Promise of Christian Liberty (2017) and the forthcoming Called to Freedom: Retrieving Christian Liberty in an Age of License. He is a weekly columnist at WORLD Opinions\, and publishes widely in other journals including First Things\, National Affairs\, American Affairs\, Plough\, Mere Orthodoxy\, The American Conservative\, Ad Fontes\, and more. SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

SUMMARY:Logos Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Rev. Dr. Ryan O’Dowd and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning on Monday\, September 9th\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 7:30pm–9pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester. \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. \nApply Today!

Bringing together people from varying faith traditions and beliefs\, they welcome all students from any background to join over a meal while discussing the big questions that transcend discipline and majors.
