SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to breakfast and a “Public Reading of Scripture” every Friday morning. \nThe Public Reading of Scripture helped God’s people remember who God is\, who they were\, and who they are called to be. This practice was so important to Paul that in 1 Timothy 4:13\, he instructed all to “… devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture\, to preaching and to teaching.” Come eat\, listen\, and share in this historic practice with us weekly at the women’s residence. \nMade possible by the Grace and Mercy Foundation

SUMMARY:After Whiteness: The Search for Belonging
DESCRIPTION:We come to the academy to be shaped into critical thinkers\, independent minds\, but we are often unaware of the spiritual and racial formation these models of the “educated man” carry. In his recent book\, After Whiteness\, theologian Willie Jennings untangles our pedagogies which are tied to the image of the white slave-master\, drawing from his many years of experience in higher-ed\, especially as an academic dean. And in her work in higher-ed in the sphere of student life and recently as the interim dean of students at Cornell University\, Marla Love tackles questions of diversity\, inclusion\, and belonging on a daily basis. Join us in conversation about how we\, as members of the academic community\, can engage\, resist\, and imagine differently the spiritual and racial formation we’ve inherited.\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\nBios:\nWillie Jennings’ book The Christian Imagination: Theology and the Origins of Race(link is external) (Yale 2010) won the American Academy of Religion Award of Excellence in the Study of Religion in the Constructive-Reflective category the year after it appeared and\, in 2015\, the Grawemeyer Award in Religion\, the largest prize for a theological work in North America. Englewood Review of Books called the work a “theological masterpiece.” His commentary on the Book of Acts\, titled Acts: A Commentary\, The Revolution of the Intimate (for the Belief Series\, Westminster/John Knox) received the Reference Book of the Year Award from The Academy of Parish Clergy in 2018. \nDr. Jennings has also recently published a book that examines the problems of theological education within western education\, entitled After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging(link is external) (Eerdmans\, 2020). \nJennings is now working on a major monograph provisionally entitled Unfolding the World: Recasting a Christian Doctrine of Creation as well as a finishing a book of poetry entitled The Time of Possession. \nWriting in the areas of liberation theologies\, cultural identities\, and anthropology\, Jennings has authored more than 40 scholarly essays and nearly two-dozen reviews\, as well as essays on academic administration and blog posts for Religion Dispatches. \nJennings is an ordained Baptist minister and has served as interim pastor for several North Carolina churches. He is in high demand as a speaker and is widely recognized as a major figure in theological education across North America. \nA Calvin College graduate\, Jennings received his M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. in religion and ethics from Duke. \n\n______________________\n\nPrior to her role as the Robert W. and Elizabeth C. Staley Interim Dean of Students\, Marla Love served as Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Equity working directly with the diversity and student empowerment units in the Office of the Dean of Students to create an intersectional programming model that engages our students in new and innovative ways. \nShe worked closely with our partners in Campus and Community Engagement\, as well as in the Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives to produce powerful synergies and collaborations that enhance the student experience and deepen our commitment to underserved student communities. She also worked closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Care and Crisis Services to find ways to blend our approach to crisis management with an inclusion model that keeps Cornell on the leading edge of campus-wide crisis management. She also serves as chair of the university’s Bias Assessment and Review Team (BART) for student only related bias incidents. \nPrior to Cornell\, Marla worked at Azusa Pacific University in Southern California\, where she served as the Director of Graduate and Professional Student Affairs. Prior to her time at APU\, she served as the Assistant Dean of Students at Scripps College\, where she held broad oversight on a number of social justice programs\, crisis management operations\, and Title IX responsibilities. Marla has held numerous roles in higher education and worked across multiple regions of the country\, including time at Phillips (Andover) Academy in Massachusetts. She holds a M.A. in higher education through the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education at the University of Michigan and a B.A. in psychology from Calvin College in Michigan. Currently\, Marla is pursuing a Ph.D. in higher education.

SUMMARY:Rediscovering G.K. Chesterton | 2 Part Event
DESCRIPTION:Who is G.K. Chesterton?? And why is there a house named after him?\n\nThese are good questions and we hope to answer them in a TWO-PART RETREAT\, engaging this enigmatic and witty British author and questioning what he might have to say for the 21st century.\n\nPart 1: Art historian\, Dr. Matthew Milliner will elaborate how insights from Chesterton can act as a guide to understanding the broad sweep of Native American art. While this connection might seem odd it is one that Chesterton himself hoped to make. \n\nPart 2: Hannah Eagleson (Ph.D. in Renaissance Literature) will follow this conversation with a dialogue on how we can practice the virtue of hospitality in our reading\, writing and thinking\, especially with those whose time periods and temperaments differ from our own.\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\nTIMES:\nFriday\, April 23rd\nDr. Matthew Milliner “Reading GK Chesterton on Turtle Island” 11am-12pm\nDr. Hannah Eagleson “Practicing Intellectual Hospitality” 1pm-2pm\n\nSPEAKERS:\n\nMatthew Milliner is associate professor of art history at Wheaton College. He holds an M.A. & Ph.D. in art history from Princeton University\, and an M.Div from Princeton Theological Seminary. He is currently a Commonwealth fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia\, and is a five-time appointee to the Curatorial Advisory Board of the United States Senate. His book The Everlasting People: G.K. Chesterton and the First Nations is forthcoming from InterVarsity Press this Fall.\n\nDr. Hannah Eagleson is Associate Director of InterVarsity’s Emerging Scholars Network\, and Project Director for The Ithaca Roundtable on Science and Religion\, a project of Chesterton House. She also co-designed the Inklings study guide series Walking to Wisdom for Classical Academic Press\, and wrote guides to The Lord of the Rings\, Till We Have Faces\, and Dorothy Sayers’ play cycle The Man Born to Be King. She holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature from the University of Delaware and an MA in liberal arts from St. John’s College (Annapolis). Dr. Eagleson is working on a children’s novel about a dragon who runs a tea shop in eighteenth-century London\, and she is a longtime fan of Chesterton’s Father Brown stories.

SUMMARY:Is Beauty a Guide to Truth?
DESCRIPTION:Beauty inspires. It inspires humans to great feats of imagination and discovery. But can beauty help us find the truth about the world? About ourselves? Might beauty contribute to the advance of sciences or reveal the presence of God? An Oxford Physicist and a Virginia Tech philosopher debate the relationship between aesthetics\, science\, and human meaning.\n\nDr. Ard Louis\, Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford\, where he leads an interdisciplinary research group studying problems on the border between chemistry\, physics and biology.\n\nDr. Ben Jantzen\, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Virginia Tech\, where he studies inference and language in science: the contents and character of the natural world and how we come to know it.\n–\nChesterton House is excited to host this event alongside the Bradley Study Center at Virginia Tech.\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:God\, Politics\, and the Healing of the Nations | Spring Course
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible today to act in faith as a follower of God and participate in modern politics? Will religion misshape and misdirect our efforts to achieve justice? Or will political engagement misshape and misdirect our efforts to follow God? This course takes us on a journey through some deeper historical currents of Christian reflection on politics\, and their attempts to answer these questions. A number of special guest visitors will introduce a few systematic approaches to the church’s relation to the state (e.g. Augustinian\, Lutheran\, Reformed\, Catholic social thought\, Anabaptist etc.). Rather than focus on immediate political questions of today\, we will step back and hear from these traditions in their own time\, and their attempts to take a complex Biblical inheritance and apply it to social and political dilemmas in front of them. Our aim is to refresh our hopes\, visions\, and commitments both to God as well as to fallible human communities and governments. This mini-course has short weekly readings. \nREGISTER NOW\nSpeakers: \n  \nJohn Owen- “God and Politics: Three Christian Views. \nJohn M. Owen is Amb. Henry J. and Mrs. Marion R.
