SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture in Sage Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the beautiful Sage Chapel\, and snag a free lunch! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Tuesday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us! \n

SUMMARY:Faith\, Race\, and Environmental Justice: The Lead Water Crisis in Benton Harbor\, Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by Chesterton House\, InterVarsity\, Graduate Christian Fellowship\, and GPSAFC \nFaith\, Race\, and Environmental Justice: The Lead Water Crisis in Benton Harbor\, Michigan\nA Conversation with Rev Edward Pinkney\, Environmental Justice Advocate and Educator \nOpen to the Graduate Community and All Interested \nFriday\, May 5th\, 2023\n7pm – 8:30pm\nRockefeller 201\, Cornell Campus\nor via Zoom\n\nREGISTER HERE!\n\nIn October 2021\, local news turned international: Benton Harbor\, a small Michigan town along the shores of Lake Michigan\, was dubbed “the next Flint” for lead in its water pipes above and beyond federally safe levels. Reverend Edward Pinkney\, local pastor and president of the Benton Harbor Community Water Council\, helped lead a grassroots effort to achieve safer water for the community. Hear Rev. Pinkney’s story and insights into effective community environmental advocacy. \n\n\nRev Edward Pinkney\, Environmental Justice Advocate and Educator\n\n\nReverend Edward Pinkney is a long-time advocate for social and economic justice for Benton Harbor\, a small town in Southwest Michigan. He is pastor of God’s Household of Faith Church and the founder of numerous community-based organizations. In 2003\, he founded the Black Autonomy Network Community Organization\, a political and social justice coalition working in Benton Harbor in the wake of a death of a 28-year-old African American while being pursued by police. He’s also established the Benton Harbor Community Water Council\, where he sits as president. The water council was key in bringing to the EPA and media attention the lead water crisis in Benton Harbor in 2021\, leading to the replacement of the pipes. His church was also a leading distributor of water and educational space for the community about the dangers of ingesting lead. \n  \n\nPlease contact Francine Barchett at fgb43@cornell.edu any special arrangements you may require in order to attend this event

Dr. Ryan O’Dowd and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian!) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics and introduces students to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nMeetings will be select Monday evenings 7:30-9pm during the semester.

SUMMARY:From Dysfunction to Wellness: How Faith Helps Heal Families in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton House and Cornell Christian Legal Society present: \nFrom Dysfunction to Wellness: How Faith Helps Heal Families in Crisis\nA Conversation with District Judge Ryan Larson \nApril 18th\, 2023\n5:30pm | reception to follow\nFounder’s Room in Anabel Taylor Hall \nRegister Here to join remotely\n*Registration not needed if attending in person \nAs a judge seeing a tremendous flow of brokenness and despair in an urban public family court system\, Judge Ryan Larson wanted to find an alternative to the prison pipeline and never-ending child protective services interventions. He pioneered an innovative community-based program that brought together judicial and political entities across the ideological spectrum along with local churches\, community groups\, and other faith-based organizations. Judge Larson will talk about his own journey developing this program and its ongoing challenges in seeking justice and helping families to flourish amidst crippling disadvantage. \n\nDistrict Judge Ryan Larson \nRyan D. Larson was sworn into office on April 4\, 2016. Judge Larson launched and leads Williamson County’s first-ever Family Recovery Court\, an alternative to the traditional processing of Child Protective Services cases involving substance abuse and mental health conditions. The Family Recovery Court applies an evidence-based\, non-adversarial\, collaborative approach and utilizes a multidisciplinary team. By coordinating local faith-based organizations\, non-profits\, and other community stakeholders\, the Court builds Williamson County’s capacity to develop\, implement and sustain the community’s own solutions to address needs within the child welfare system. \nPrior to taking office\, Judge Larson was an administrative law judge for the State of Texas\, responsible for managing administrative law judges in energy and environmental matters\, ensuring the quality of the issued orders\, and maintaining the integrity of the hearings process. Prior to that\, he served as an assistant attorney general and an attorney in private practice. As a litigator\, he has been successful at every level of Texas courts\, from trial courts\, intermediate appellate courts\, to the Texas Supreme Court. \nOutside the courtroom\, Judge Larson served as the judicial appointee to the legislatively created Prevention Advisory Task Force. The high-level task force was charged with making recommendations to the Texas Legislature on statewide child safety strategies that help prevent child abuse and neglect. This work involved working with leaders across the state to improve outcomes for the most vulnerable Texans. \nJudge Larson is married with two beautiful children that greatly enrich his life. The family worships and serves at a local church. \n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Capitalism and Love of Neighbor: Can They Be Reconciled?
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nCapitalism and Love of Neighbor: Can They Be Reconciled?\nA Conversation with Sarah Estelle Associate Professor of Economics; Hope College \nApril 10th\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here \nTypically Christians who focus on the morality of markets and economics see the problem as “taming” markets to mitigate the unjust outcomes they tend to produce. Classically libertarian views are not usually looked upon favorably by Christian theologians who engage in economic questions\, being too fixated on individualism at the expense of the common good. Prof. Estelle has taken a different view\, defending the libertarian political economy inspired by F. A. Hayek and classical Christian thinkers such as Augustine and Aquinas. On her view\, markets can actually serve as an instrument of love\, and finds a surprising compatibility with Augustinian concerns of the classical Christian tradition. Join us in conversation with Sarah as we hear about her own journey in finding an unlikely synthesis between these approaches.\n\n\nSarah Estelle Associate Professor of Economics; Hope College\nProfessor Sarah Estelle is an associate professor of economics at Hope College. Because she believes economics can be useful everywhere and used by everyone\, she enjoys extending the theories and empirical techniques of microeconomics to questions located along the “imperialist” frontier of economic research. For example\, Professor Estelle has published work on criminal justice reform\, higher education\, risky adolescent behaviors and parents’ investments in children. More broadly yet\, Professor Estelle is intrigued by the role of government in human flourishing and is especially fascinated by the big ideas of Nobel Laureate economist F.A. Hayek related to knowledge and information\, cultural evolution\, and order not of design but of human action. \nMost recently Professor Estelle has undertaken work bridging the principles of traditional Christian teaching and classical liberal economics and especially applying the lessons of economics to the Christian virtue of love\, thickly construed. She is the director of Religious Liberty in the States\, a brand-new statistical index that measures the legal safeguards for the free exercise of religion in the United States. \nProfessor Estelle is the founding director of Hope’s Markets & Morality student organization\, which explores economic issues through a Christian lens and brings speakers and film screenings to campus to enrich the Hope community’s understanding of markets. Markets & Morality celebrates its 10th year in 2022–23. \n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Can Capitalism Be Christian? Economics and Social Hierarchies
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nCan Capitalism Be Christian? Economics and Social Hierarchies\nA Conversation with Jonathan Tran Associate Professor of Philosophical Theology and George W. Baines Chair of Religion \nMarch 27\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here \nWhat if it turned out that even well-intended attempts to remedy social and economic injustice actually made things worse? Jonathan Tran\, a theological ethicist at Baylor University\, has argued just this. On his telling\, an overly narrow focus on racial biases\, bigotry\, and interpersonal microaggressions (what in modern parlance goes by “antiracism”) unwittingly entrenches the very economic structures that allow racial oppression to persist.\n\nBut what if instead the goal that antiracism seeks in vain is better found in a revolutionary Christian ethic? What Christians most need today\, Tran argues\, is a kind of economic revolutionary spirit\, one that goes beyond mere Marxism\, which lacks the framework required for moral judgment and just action. On his view\, Christianity can supply just this sort of economic revolutionary spirit\, one that would be better suited to address oppressive social structures of what he terms “racial capitalism” by pushing for a Biblical vision of a just social order. Join us in conversation with Jonathan about theology\, social hierarchy\, and economic justice.\n\n\nJonathan Tran Associate Professor of Philosophical Theology and George W. Baines\nOriginally from Southern California\, Jonathan received his BA from University of California\, Riverside and his M.Div. and Ph.D. from Duke Divinity School where he studied under Stanley Hauerwas. He joined Baylor University’s Religion Department after completing his graduate studies in theology and ethics at Duke University. Currently\, he serves as Associate Dean of Baylor’s Honors College and Associate Professor of Theology within the Great Texts program. Jonathan teaches undergraduate and graduate courses while serving students\, staff\, and faculty in the Honors College\, and his research examines the theological and political implications of human life in language. \n\n\nRegister Here
