SUMMARY:Logos 1100: Christian Tradition & its Critics
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Dr. Jimmy Myers and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning again on Monday\, September 14th\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–8:30pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester. \nDinner will be provided! \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending.\n \napply today \nmore information \n

SUMMARY:Jennifer A. Frey
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton House & COLLIS Institute present: \nWhy Are We Here? On the Proper Ends of an Undergraduate Education\nThursday\, October 22nd\, 2026\n5:00pm EST\nPhysical Sciences Building 120 or via Zoom\nDinner reception to follow \nregister here \nIs the purpose of a university education to get a degree? To get a good job? To have a transformative social experience? \nWhile these are\, naturally\, valuable components of a university education\, Jennifer Frey argues that the primary goal of college is the cultivation of a student’s humanity–their mind\, character\, and inner freedom. The college years should be a time when students are transformed through their personal search for truth. Other outcomes may naturally follow\, but they are external to the central goal of personal formation. For the Christian\, this personal formation means having our lives\, virtues\, and intellectual pursuits properly oriented toward God. \nBut what happens when the technological tools universities embrace and teach begin to undermine the formation of those very virtues? Frey argues that artificial intelligence threatens our humanity along several dimensions. If the primary purpose of university life is to cultivate our humanity\, then universities should be cautious about when and how AI belongs in the educational experience. Perhaps more cautious than they are currently being. \nJoin us for an evening with Jennifer Frey\, in conversation with Dean Peter Loewen (Cornell College of Arts and Sciences) as we explore what a university education is actually for\, how AI might contribute to (or threaten) this purpose\, and what the Christian intellectual tradition has to say about the proper ends of education. \nJennifer A. Frey; Director\, Classical Liberal Arts\, Visiting Professor\, College of Arts and Sciences\, Fellow\, Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture\, University of Virginia\, Watson Manor \nJennifer A. Frey is Director of Programs in Classical Liberal Arts at the University of Virginia\, where she is also a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture and Visiting Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences. She came to Virginia from the University of Tulsa\, where she served as the inaugural Dean of the Honors College\, whose curriculum centered on the great books of Western civilization. Before Tulsa she was Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of South Carolina\, where she also held the title of Peter and Bonnie McCausland Faculty Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences. \nJennifer earned her Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh and her B.A. in philosophy and medieval studies\, with a minor in classics\, at Indiana University Bloomington. She has published widely on virtue and moral psychology and has edited three academic volumes on virtue and human action Self-Transcendence and Virtue: Perspectives from Philosophy\, Psychology\, and Theology; Practical Truth; and a forthcoming volume\, Practical Wisdom. She is currently writing a book on the liberal arts and freedom. Her non-academic writing has appeared in First Things\, Image\, Law and Liberty\, The Chronicle of Higher Education\, The New York Times\, The Point\, USA Today\, and The Wall Street Journal\, among other venues. She hosts the philosophy\, theology\, and literature podcast Sacred and Profane Love. \n  \nPeter John Loewen\, Harold Tanner Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences \nPeter is a professor of government and the Dean of Cornell’s largest college. His research examines how citizens can make better choices\, politicians can make better decisions\, and how we can harness technological change to improve democracy and the economy. He has published in leading journals in political science and general science\, and several other fields. \n

SUMMARY:Theological Society: Dean Sujin Pak
DESCRIPTION:Guest Scholar: \nA Conversation with Dean Sujin Pak\nDean Sujin Pak\, Professor of the History of Christianity\, Boston University School of Theology\nDr. G. Sujin Pak is Dean of the Boston University School of Theology and Professor of the History of Christianity. Her scholarship and teaching focus on the early modern period\, the Protestant Reformation\, and the history of biblical interpretation. Pak is the author of The Judaizing Calvin: Sixteenth-Century Debates on the Messianic Psalms (Oxford University Press\, 2010) and The Reformation of Prophecy: Early Modern Interpretations of the Prophet and Old Testament Prophecy (Oxford University Press\, 2018)\, as well as several articles appearing in journals such as Church History\, Renaissance & Reformation Review\, Religions\, and Calvin Theological Journal. As a teacher\, Pak encourages her students to engage a variety of perspectives with attention to their social contexts. Pak serves as secretary of the ATS Board of Directors\, president of AUMTS and Wesley Works\, vice president of the Calvin Studies Society executive board\, Reformation Area Editor for the Encyclopedia of the Bible and its Reception\, and member of the University Senate of the UMC. \n\nTHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY\nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. Members of the group seek to nurture discussion by listening attentively to one another\, guarding the length of our responses\, and avoiding diversions to pet issues unrelated to the subject at hand. In short\, we seek to embody a uniquely Christian form of intellectual hospitality that we can pass on to future generations. \n  \nEmail to join
