SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to breakfast and a “Public Reading of Scripture” every Friday morning. \nThe Public Reading of Scripture helped God’s people remember who God is\, who they were\, and who they are called to be. This practice was so important to Paul that in 1 Timothy 4:13\, he instructed all to “… devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture\, to preaching and to teaching.” Come eat\, listen\, and share in this historic practice with us weekly at the women’s residence. \nMade possible by the Grace and Mercy Foundation

SUMMARY:Dante & Aquinas on Love and the Moral Life
DESCRIPTION:Dante is one of the greatest poets in the West\, and he is also a superb Thomist. He not only represents the ethics\, philosophical psychology\, and philosophical theology of Aquinas\, but he extends the Thomist worldview by enfleshing it in gripping stories and memorable images. In this short course\, we will consider the nature and structure of Dante’s Inferno\, and then we will look in detail at his representation and exposition of the sins of opportunism\, lust\, gluttony\, avarice\, wrath\, and treachery. We will learn something about the way in which Dante uses narrative and poetic devices to illuminate deep truths about human life\, and we will also gain insight into the powerful Christian worldview Aquinas inherits and passes on.\n\n\n\nDates/time:\nFriday – 12/4 \nTuesday – 12/8 \nFriday – 12/11 \nTuesday – 12/15 \n4:00 – 6:00 pm EST \n\n\nRegister Here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEleonore Stump is the Robert J. Henle Professor of Philosophy at Saint Louis University. She is an Honorary Professor at Wuhan University and at the Logos Institute\, St. Andrews\, and a Professorial Fellow at Australian Catholic University. She has published extensively in philosophy of religion\, contemporary metaphysics\, and medieval philosophy. Her books include Aquinas (2003)\, Wandering in Darkness: Narrative and the Problem of Suffering (2010)\, and Atonement (2018). She has given the Gifford Lectures (Aberdeen\, 2003)\, the Wilde lectures (Oxford\, 2006)\, the Stewart lectures (Princeton\, 2009)\, and the Stanton lectures (Cambridge\, 2018). She is past president of the Society of Christian Philosophers\, the American Catholic Philosophical Association\, and the American Philosophical Association\, Central Division; and she is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.\n\n

SUMMARY:CURW Care Group | Racial Dignity\, Trauma\, & Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:In the Body: Racial Dignity\, Trauma\, & Solidarity \n“In the Body” will be a 6 session small group led by Chesterton House staff\, Cole Arthur Riley.  This small group is open to BIPOC students of any or no religious background. We will cultivate a space of storytelling\, celebration\, lament\, and solidarity\, and try to discern our spirituality as we exist in the deep racialized trauma of the US and our communities. We will think through what it means to cling to faith during a political season that runs the risk of alienating our bodies and spirituality. Our discussions will be prompted each week by a quote from a historic BIPOC thinker or activist. \nREGISTER HERE\nWhat is a Care Group? \n \nThese groups are not therapy groups\, nor are they seminar-style study groups; rather\, they are chaplain-facilitated community groups that help you give and receive spiritual support and care. The length\, frequency\, and audience for each group varies\, but what they have in common is a commitment to creating spaces that nurture holistic wellbeing. \nCURW is a cooperative interfaith ministry team with religious leaders who represent a variety of spiritual traditions. CURW Care Groups are not intended to be spaces for proselytizing or converting people to a particular religious point of view; rather\, they are designed to be spaces where each member can share their spiritual perspectives and make meaning of their experiences. We affirm the individual experiences and approaches to spirituality that each student may bring to these conversations. All Care Group participants are encouraged to speak from their own particular experiences and respect the experiences of others. \nLearn more about other CURW Care Groups!

SUMMARY:Mathematics for Human Flourishing: A Conversation on Beauty\, Justice\, & Love
DESCRIPTION:For many people\, math is cold and lifeless\, a bunch of rules to follow—a way to separate people rather than a way to bring them together. It’s no wonder that many have anxiety over their math experiences. But what if we could see how math is tied to our deepest human longings—for beauty\, for justice\, for love? Would we see it—and ourselves—differently? Join mathematician Francis Su in conversation with Mia Chung-Yee as they discuss the broader implications of his new book Mathematics for Human Flourishing\, which he wrote in collaboration with his friend Christopher Jackson\, an incarcerated man who reshaped Su’s own views of what math is\, who it’s for\, and why anyone should learn it. \nFrancis Su is the Benediktsson-Karwa Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College\, and former president of the Mathematical Association of America. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University\, and his research is in geometric combinatorics and applications to the social sciences. He was a sabbatical visitor to Cornell University in 2000 in the Operations Research department. He also has a passion for popularizing mathematics\, frequently writing about the dignity of human beings in connection with the wonder of mathematical teaching. In 2013\, he received the Haimo Award\, a nationwide teaching prize for college math faculty\, and in 2018 he won the Halmos-Ford writing award for a speech that inspired his book Mathematics for Human Flourishing (2020). His work has been featured in Quanta Magazine\, Wired\, and the New York Times. \nMia Chung-Yee\, Founder and Board Chair of The Octet Collaborative\, has enjoyed great success internationally as a solo recitalist\, concerto soloist and chamber musician. In 1993\, she won first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition and in 1997\, she received the Avery Fisher Career Grant\, the highest recognition for young concert artists in the United States. Mia graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College\, a master’s degree from Yale University and doctorate from The Juilliard School. She served as Professor of Music and Artist in Residence at Gordon College from 1991 to 2011 and joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music as Professor of Musical Studies in 2012. She has been a guest speaker and panelist at Veritas Forum events and was a fellow in the Veritas Riff program in 2014 and 2018. Dr. Chung-Yee’s introduction to the Christian study center movement occurred in 2018 when she was a guest lecturer at Cornell’s Chesterton House. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:God Speaks: Augustine on Interpreting Scripture
DESCRIPTION:How do we understand God actually somehow communicating to us via the Bible? This course looks at Augustine\, a 4th century North African scholar and bishop\, widely considered to be the greatest published Christian intellect of the first thousand years of church history. He grappled with many of the same puzzles contemporary readers of the Bible face: how should we read or interpret it? Does everyone have their own interpretation? Does God speak “literally” in the Bible? What is the role of the Spirit in the process of reading? Augustine is not the church’s first interpreter of the Bible. But he is the first to formalize his interpretation into a method that could be taught and learned by others. Augustine’s careful reading of Scripture led him to think in new ways not just about the nature and limits of language\, but to the very nature of inner spiritual journey\, the sinful human condition\, the need for Christian political thought\, and the usefulness of pagan philosophy and literature. Much of the western liberal arts tradition has its roots here in this great thinker. Our short readings (max. 15 pgs / week) will lead us through Augustine’s reading of the Bible to understand his context and reflect on the wisdom it provides in our own age.   \nREGISTER HERE\nCourse Dates:  \nTuesday September 22nd\, 7:30pm-8:45pm \n\nConditions permitting\, we hope to do this in person on the outdoor patio space at Chesterton House (115 The Knoll). ****While Cornell remains in the yellow zone\, space will be limited to the first 10 undergraduate student registrants.\n\nAll subsequent sessions will be Zoom meetings. Non-Cornell students are welcome to attend. Cornell students will have priority in discussions. \nTuesday September 29th\, 7:30pm-8:45pm \nTuesday October 6th\, 7:30pm-8:45pm \nTuesday October 13th\, 7:30pm-8:45pm \nTuesday October 20th\, 7:30pm-8:45pm \nTuesday October 27th\, 7:30pm-8:45pm
