SUMMARY:Logos Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Dr. Jimmy Myers and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning on Monday\, September 15th\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–9pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester. \nDinner will be provided! \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. \napply today \nmore information \n

SUMMARY:John Swinton: Chesterton Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \n“Please Don’t Fix Me. Welcome Me.”: A Christian Reflection on People with Disabilities\nA conversation with John Swinton\, Professor in Practical Theology and Pastoral Care\, Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen \nMay 1\, 2025\n3 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\nOr join us via Zoom \nRegister Here \nLet’s be honest: most of us have not spent time formulating a theology of human disability\, especially for people with permanent intellectual limitations like schizophrenia\, dementia\, or Down syndrome. Laden with the modern idea of “equality\,” we awkwardly strive to make everyone the same\, measuring others’ experiences of life against our own—and unintentionally defining what it means to be human by our own standards. But what if that’s not only unfair\, but also wrong and harmful? \nMaybe people with disabilities need less energy spent on making them like us\, and more effort to welcome them as already fully human brothers and sisters created by God. Maybe it is their differences in our midst that help us understand our own humanity—reminding us that no one is an autonomous owner of their own life or master of their own fate\, but rather a beneficiary of God’s gratuitous gift of life\, to be given back to Him in gratitude. Reminding us that being human isn’t about subjective or performative metrics\, but rather something far deeper. Perhaps there are some (maybe many?) inequalities in this world that aren’t just unavoidable but are actually essential to understanding our humanity and what it means for all of us to become the Body of Christ. \nJoin us in welcoming John Swinton\, Professor of Practical Theology and Pastoral Care\, and Chair of Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen. Drawing from his journey from working as a Registered Mental Health Nurse to studying the theology of disability\, Rev. Professor Swinton will share his practical and theological insights to help us reflect together on a Christian theology of disability. \nJohn Swinton; Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies\, Professor in Practical Theology and Pastoral Care; School of Divinity\, History and Philosophy; King’s College University of Aberdeen\nJohn Swinton is Professor in Practical Theology and Pastoral Care and Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen. For more than a decade John worked as a registered mental health nurse. He also worked for a number of years as a hospital and community mental health Chaplain alongside of people with severe mental health challenges who were moving from the hospital into the community. In 2004\, he founded the University of Aberdeen’s Centre for Spirituality\, Health and Disability. He has published widely within the area of mental health\, dementia\, disability theology\, spirituality and healthcare\, end of life care\, qualitative research and pastoral care. John is the author of a number of monographs including Finding Jesus in the Storm: The spiritual lives of people with mental health challenges. (Eerdmans 2020) which won the Aldersgate prize for outstanding interdisciplinary work within theology. His book Dementia: Living in the memories of God won the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Ramsey Prize for excellence in theological writing. John is married with 5 children. John is also a musician. His new album– Beautiful Songs About Difficult Things – is now availabe: https://open.spotify.com/album/6TvUBFhAcDH1u8L6dV8web?si=_IxIsyYkTayOBUfTYEsrZw

SUMMARY:My Load is Easy: An Invitation to Cease Striving\, Building\, and Bettering
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nMy Load is Easy: An Invitation to Cease Striving\, Building\, and Bettering\nA conversation with Ephraim Radner; Professor Emeritus of Historical Theology \nMarch 10\, 2025\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom \nRegister Here \nOur generation pressures itself to meet abstract and unattainable standards of equality\, self-actualization\, and social improvement. We feel pulled toward one of two extremes: striving endlessly to create a perfect world and a perfect life\, or retreating into distraction or numbness when our efforts fail. We long for all things to be made new\, yet we struggle to tolerate ambiguity and wait patiently for God’s return. Instead of living with hope and eager expectation\, we carry a self-imposed and ever-increasing weight of anxiety and despair. \nEphraim Radner\, Emeritus Professor of Historical Theology at Wycliffe College\, University of Toronto\, offers a different way. Through the gifting of his Spirit\, God invites us to fully engage this present life—embracing both its moments of glorious astonishment and its seasons of suffering—while learning to rest in Christ’s easy yoke until His return. \nWhat if Jesus truly meant it when He said\, My load is easy? And what if it’s still true for us today? Join us for this powerful conversation about living lightly in a heavy world. \nEphraim Radner; Professor Emeritus of Historical Theology at Wycliffe College\, University of Toronto; PhD in Theology (Yale University)BA (Dartmouth College)\, MDiv (Yale Divinity School)\nPrior to his appointment as Professor of Historical Theology\, the Rev. Dr. Radner was rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension\, Pueblo\, Colorado. His range of ministerial experience includes Burundi\, where he worked as a missionary\, Haiti\, inner-city Cleveland\, and Connecticut. He has taught at seminaries in Connecticut and Colorado. In the Anglican Communion context he is a member of the Covenant Design Group. He is a violinist\, hiker\, and traveler. He is married to the Rev. Annette Brownlee and they are the parents of Hannah and Isaac. Radner’s research and teaching interests include pneumatology\, ecclesiology and ecumenism\, and biblical hermeneutics. Radner is currently co-editing a volume on Anglican figural reading of the Scriptures\, and working on a larger project involving Christian politics. \nEcclesiology: Ecclesial decision-making\, politics and ecumenism\, Scriptural hermeneutics and the theological categories of “time” and “history”\, The character of early modern Christian self-identity\, Pneumatology\, Contemporary Christian social experience\, Theological Interpretation of Scripture.

SUMMARY:Online Course with Vivek Mathew & Ryan O'Dowd
DESCRIPTION:Equality in the Hot Seat: A Promising Idea That Fails to Deliver\nOnline course with Dr. Vivek Mathew & Rev. Dr. Ryan O’Dowd\nJanuary 6th\, 7th\, 20th\, 21st\n8pm – 9pm ET\nRemotely via Zoom \nRegister Here \nThe Chesterton House on-campus Logos seminar discussions are an award-winning and unique educational experience in Christian higher education\, guiding students through flashpoints of contemporary cultural debates in conversation with historic Christian intellectual traditions. This course will give our online-only audience an abbreviated taste of those discussions\, specially geared for our alumni and supporters around the world. The discussions will be led by our Executive Director Vivek Mathew and Academic Director Ryan O’Dowd. \nThis year\, our thematic center has been equality. The idea of equality has modern incarnations that attempt to protect human dignity and achieve a more just distribution of created goods within a world of fallen creatures and broken economic systems. But how did this modern idea of equality come about? How did it come to take center place in our moral ecology? And how does it compare with older Biblical ideals\, and historic Christian intellectual foundations? This short course will briefly survey how equality in its modern guise became the reigning starting point for guiding moral and political thought\, from both within Christian internal debates as well as secular challenges to Christian ethics. The course will bring together a combination of Biblical passages and theological and philosophical readings for our reflection\, from patristics to contemporary analytic philosophers and theologians\, including both Christian and non-Christian perspectives. It does not aim to settle final questions or positions in the debates\, but provide an intellectual and conceptual framework to orient them. \nThis online-only course will have a limited number of registration spots\, so register today if you are interested. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Singing the Blues: A Moral Alternative to Vengeance and Apathy?
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nSinging the Blues: A Moral Alternative to Vengeance and Apathy?\nA conversation with Angel Adams Parham\, Associate Professor of Sociology and senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture (IASC) at the University of Virginia\nNovember 11\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom \nRegister Here \nMany of America’s most tense public battles over the last decade hinge on disputes about rival readings of history. Yet we have irreconcilable accounts of what happened and why\, let alone who is responsible and how to move forward. These historical stalemates foster an increasingly polarized culture. \nBut what if our disputes brought together not only what we think happened in the past\, but how and why we choose to remember it? A fuller exploration uncovers the way history is shaped by our moral imagination\, bringing together emotions such as anger and optimism. As a sociologist and trenchant commenter on the ways social communities shape their own stories\, Angel Adams Parham looks to a deeper vision of history that goes beyond simplistic stories. \nCould we “sing the blues” as Angel Adams Parham phrases it? A different way of understanding history could help us move forward in hope without forgetting the sins of our past. \nAngel Adams Parham; Associate Professor of Sociology and Senior Fellow\, Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia\nAngel Adams Parham is Associate Professor of Sociology\, senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture\, and Associate Director for the major in Political and Social Thought at the University of Virginia. Through her research in historical sociology\, she engages in inquiry that examines the past in order to better understand how to live well in the present and envision wisely for the future. Her first book\, American Routes: Racial Palimpsests and the Transformation of Race (Oxford\, 2017)\, received several awards. Her latest book\, co-authored with Anika Prather\, was published in 2022 and is entitled The Black Intellectual Tradition: Reading Freedom in Classical Literature. Parham has published articles on the intersection of Black writers and classical liberal education in popular outlets including the Washington Post\, Wall Street Journal\, Public Discourse\, Comment Magazine\, The Hedgehog Review\, and Common Good Magazine. Her work finds expression in the community in her capacity as the co-founder and executive director of Nyansa Classical Community\, an educational organization which provides curricula and programming designed to connect with students from diverse backgrounds\, inviting them to take part in the Great Conversation\, cultivate the moral imagination\, and pursue truth\, goodness\, and beauty. Parham has been a member of the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton\, as well as the recipient of a Fulbright grant. She received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University and completed her doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

\nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Rev. Dr. Ryan O’Dowd and philosopher Dr. \nBeginning on Monday\, September 9th\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 7:30pm–9pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester. \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. \nApply Today!

SUMMARY:Puncturing the Myth of Equality
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nPuncturing the Myth of Equality\nA conversation with Brad Littlejohn\, Fellow at Ethics and Public Policy Center\nSeptember 30\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nNo ideal has dominated modern political thought more than equality. Yet apart from political philosophers and economists\, few of us give equality any serious thought. We tacitly accept inequalities that seem necessary for society to function: parents and children\, teachers and students\, politicians and citizens\, etc. We even celebrate massive inequalities between ourselves and others like olympic athletes\, musicians\, doctors\, and poets. And yet\, we appeal to equality to protect the common dignity of being made in the image of God. When should we push towards greater equality\, and when should we instead accept hierarchical inequalities and celebrate difference?\n\nJoin us as we host the political theologian Brad Littlejohn who will help us navigate our way through myths and merits of equality.\n\n\n\n\nBrad Littlejohn; Fellow at Ethics and Public Policy Center\nBrad Littlejohn (Ph.D\, University of Edinburgh) is a Fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC)\, where he helms a project for renewing an authentically Protestant contribution to American civic renewal. He is also the founder and President Emeritus of The Davenant Institute\, where for ten years he helped create resources and courses to form Christian leaders in wisdom to navigate our increasingly challenging cultural moment. A leading voice in Protestant ethics and political thought\, he is the author or editor of nineteen books\, including The Peril and Promise of Christian Liberty (2017) and the forthcoming Called to Freedom: Retrieving Christian Liberty in an Age of License. He is a weekly columnist at WORLD Opinions\, and publishes widely in other journals including First Things\, National Affairs\, American Affairs\, Plough\, Mere Orthodoxy\, The American Conservative\, Ad Fontes\, and more. SUMMARY:Chesterton Perspectives: Danielle Treweek
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nUnraveling the Meaning of Singleness\n\nA Conversation with Danielle Treweek Christian Theological Researcher\, Author\, and Speaker\n \n\n\nMarch 25th\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom\n\n\nRegister Here \n\n\n\nSingleness: the unloved waystation on the road to marriage. Mainstream Christian figures from Tim Keller and Albert Mohler to James Dobson and John MacArthur would have us believe that marriage is the preferred state for everyone\, singleness the unfortunate consolation prize or the waiting stage before something “better”. But\, what if there’s something “better” about singleness that gets overlooked today? Christian scripture and tradition teach us that singleness and marriage are equal callings with their own riches and pains and with complimentary roles foreshadowing the eternal life that awaits us. Dani Treweek proposes that we turn from these shallow and contemporary caricatures to retrieve a richer and fuller sense of what it means to be human\, both here and in eternity. \nDanielle Treweek; Christian Theological Researcher\, Author\, and Speaker\nDanielle Treweek\, Rev’d Dr Danielle Treweek (BA\, B.Div (Hons)\, PhD)\, is an ordained deacon within the Sydney Anglican Diocese. After serving as an assistant minister at St Matthias Anglican Church\, Centennial Park\, she completed doctoral research into theology of singleness for the contemporary church through St Mark’s National Theological Centre in Canberra. She is the author of The Meaning of Singleness\, is commencing commentary work on 1 & 2 Thessalonians for Hodder & Stoughton and writes for publications including Christianity Today\, Themelios\, Mere Orthodoxy\, and ABC Religion & Ethics. She is the founding director of Single Minded Ministry\, teaches at Youthworks College in Sydney\, and is a member of the Doctrine Commission within the Sydney Anglican Diocese in which she also serves as Diocesan Research Officer. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Chesterton Perspectives: Abigail Favale
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nFeminism and the Family\n\nA Conversation with Abigail Favale Professor of the Practice\, Women’s Studies\, at University of Notre Dame\n \n\n\nFebruary 19th\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom\n\nRegister Here\nWhat if the key to achieving female equality lies in embracing what makes women different from men instead of competing to be the same? Notre Dame Professor Abigail Favale was among the strongest feminist scholars in America\, when a religious transformation moved her to reassess the viewpoints she found herself defending. This reassessment led her to the conclusion that feminist theory has lost its way by trying to constantly conform to shifting trends in popular culture. The dominant culture today imposes the idea that women’s bodies are merely abstract objects of performance\, not necessarily related to “family.” From a young age\, girls are taught to strive to “keep up with the boys\,” as this is what is needed to create an “identity” for themselves—one that asks the question “What can females do\, build\, compete for\, and achieve?” without acknowledging or honoring the divine gift bestowed on them in creation. \nCoinciding with a rapid increase in girls preferring to be boys\, and the shocking rise of depression\, anxiety\, and self-harm among teens\, our culture has deviated from the creational uniqueness of women. While holding true to feminism’s vision of female equality and dignity\, Favale’s “Catholic Feminism” seeks to restore a theology of human identity grounded in family\, harmony\, wholeness\, and divine gift. \nAbigail Favale; Professor of the Practice\, Women’s Studies\, at University of Notre Dame\nAbigail is a writer and professor whose work lies at the intersection of Catholic theology\, literature\, and women’s studies. Her abiding interest as a writer and scholar is the meaning and dignity of woman\, and her work explores sexual difference and embodiment in the Catholic imagination. Her first book\, Irigaray\, Incarnation\, and Contemporary Women’s Fiction (Palgrave 2013) was awarded the 2014 Feminist and Women’s Studies Association Book Award. Her second book is Into the Deep: An Unlikely Catholic Conversion (Cascade 2018)\, a spiritual memoir that traces her journey from birthright evangelicalism to postmodern feminism and\, finally\, to the Catholic Church. Abigail’s most recent book\, The Genesis of Gender: A Christian Theory\, was published in 2022 by Ignatius Press and has already been translated into multiple languages. Her numerous essays have appeared in MICL’s Church Life Journal\, The Atlantic\, First Things\, Public Discourse\, Comment\, and elsewhere. Abigail is also a fiction writer and was awarded the J.F. Powers Prize for Short Fiction in 2017. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Chesterton Perspectives: W. Bradford Wilcox
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nFamily Drama: Does Marriage Matter?\n\nA Conversation with W. Bradford Wilcox Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia \n\n\nNovember 13th\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here\nIn today’s world\, the nuclear family unit seems to be a relic of the past. Culture has moved on to the flexibility of loving partners\, same-sex relationships\, open marriages\, and single parenting. But\, recent sociological data paints a more complicated picture… Marriage appears to make for happier people\, and children raised by two birth parents are doing better socially and economically than their peers. On the other hand\, the number of marriages is declining among middle and lower income populations. Children in these demographics are increasingly falling behind their peers. \nThe vast majority of young adults in this country want to get married\, yet the pool of “marriage-able” partners is dwindling… making the search for a compatible partner increasingly more difficult. Does marriage matter as we plan for our future and does getting married really impact our lives? Join us as we think through this urgent and multifaceted social dilemma. \nW. Bradford Wilcox; Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia\nBrad Wilcox is Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia\, the Future of Freedom Fellow at the Institute for Family Studies\, and a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. The author of Get Married: Why Americans Should Defy the Elites\, Forge Strong Families and Save Civilization (Harper Collins\, 2024)\, Wilcox studies marital quality\, marital stability\, and the impact of strong and stable marriages upon men\, women\, and children. The author and editor of six books\, Wilcox has written for scientific journals such as The American Sociological Review and The Journal of Marriage and Family\, and The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Atlantic\, and National Review. A Connecticut native\, he now lives in Charlottesville\, Virginia with his wife and family. \nRegister Here
