SUMMARY:Online Classes with Eleonore Stump on Dante’s Purgatorio
DESCRIPTION:How To Become a Good Person\nDante\, Purgatorio\, and the Transformation of the Human\nOnline course with Eleonore Stump\, Professor of Philosophy at Saint Louis University\nJanuary 8th\, 10th\, 15th\, 17th\n4:30pm – 6pm ET\nRemotely via Zoom \nRegister Here\nHow do we take ethically malformed\, broken humans like us and mold them into the sort of moral exemplars we wish we could be? Various secular views have their own answers (including the contemporary academy)\, but the classical Christian tradition has a much richer moral vision for humans that understands moral formation to be far more than “ethics education” or inculcating “values.” It’s one thing to acknowledge that we are proud\, lustful\, and lazy; it’s quite another to be transformed into virtuous followers of Jesus. In this mini-course we’ll look at one of the greatest poets of the West\, Dante Alighiere\, to see how the Thomistic vision he exemplifies tackles the transformation of sinful humans into glorified divine image-bearers. \nIn his great allegorical epic poem\, The Divine Comedy\, the second part\, Purgatorio\, deals with the renunciation of sin. Magnificent poetry subtly presents sophisticated philosophical theology and anthropology\, enfleshing it in gripping stories and memorable images. We will look at how Dante understands the process of sanctification through his unforgettable vignettes about pride\, wrath\, and sloth. We will learn something about each of these sins from the poem\, and look at the way in which Dante uses narrative and poetic devices to illuminate deep truths about human life. \nCome join us as we listen to a preeminent Christian philosopher take us on a tour of Dante’s literary masterpiece\, the Purgatorio. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture in Sage Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the beautiful Sage Chapel\, and snag a free lunch! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Tuesday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us! \n

SUMMARY:The Grindset Mindset
DESCRIPTION:Veritas Forum brings you: \nThe Grindset Mindset\nHow’s that working for you?\nA physician and a classicist share ancient wisdom for students today \nNovember 30th\, 2023\n7:30pm to 9pm ET\nToni Morrison Hall\, Multipurpose Room\nor remotely via Zoom \nFood and Insomnia Cookies Provided! \n*Space is limited\, registration required* \nRegister Here\nCornell culture valorizes a can-do spirit training students into planning\, problem solving\, and thinking strategically about their life. But the same approach that works well in securing internships and forging 10 year career plans falls short in dealing with the inevitable unexpected storms that life throws at us\, the kind of storms that one cannot problem-solve or work harder to get out of. Yet virtually every ancient wisdom tradition thought that one could prepare oneself for those types of storms by taking on a different mindset. We’ll hear tonight from experts in two of these traditions and how they help build your capacity to face life-scale upheaval in the future (or right now). \n(Co-Sponsored by Cornell Office of Spirituality and Meaning Making\, Cornell United Religious Work\, and the Flora Rose House) \nLydia Dugdale; Professor of Medicine at Columbia University and Director of the Center for Clinical Medical Ethics\nLydia Dugdale\, MD\, MAR\, is Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Director of the Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She also serves as Co-Director of Clinical Ethics at Columbia’s NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. A practicing internist\, her scholarship focuses on end-of-life issues\, the role of aesthetics in teaching ethics\, moral injury\, and the doctor-patient relationship. She edited Dying in the Twenty-First Century (MIT Press\, 2015) and is author of The Lost Art of Dying (HarperOne\, 2020)\, a popular press book on the preparation for death. Dugdale attended medical school at the University of Chicago\, completed residency training at Yale-New Haven Hospital\, and holds a MAR in ethics from Yale Divinity School. \nMike Fontaine; Professor of Classics at Cornell University\nI’m a Latinist with broad interests in Ancient Rome\, the Renaissance\, the Reformation\, and the Enlightenment. In recent years I held a variety of leadership roles in Cornell’s central administration. My latest work is a book on breakups and another on addiction and bullying\, both for Princeton University Press. Previous books covered wine\, swine\, grief\, mind\, and a good laugh. Next up\, free speech through the ages\, with projects on Plato\, Plutarch\, Lucian\, and the Enlightenment. Oh\, and I was also recently parodied on Saturday Night Live (really! see it here.) \nAt Cornell\, I teach courses on Ancient Rome\, Greek Mythology\, Wine Culture\, and Latin literature of all time periods. For business executives worldwide\, I teach eCornell courses on leadership from Ancient Rome and the effective use of humor in the workplace. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Chesterton Perspectives: W. Bradford Wilcox
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nFamily Drama: Does Marriage Matter?\n\nA Conversation with W. Bradford Wilcox Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia \n\n\nNovember 13th\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here\nIn today’s world\, the nuclear family unit seems to be a relic of the past. Culture has moved on to the flexibility of loving partners\, same-sex relationships\, open marriages\, and single parenting. But\, recent sociological data paints a more complicated picture… Marriage appears to make for happier people\, and children raised by two birth parents are doing better socially and economically than their peers. On the other hand\, the number of marriages is declining among middle and lower income populations. Children in these demographics are increasingly falling behind their peers. \nThe vast majority of young adults in this country want to get married\, yet the pool of “marriage-able” partners is dwindling… making the search for a compatible partner increasingly more difficult. Does marriage matter as we plan for our future and does getting married really impact our lives? Join us as we think through this urgent and multifaceted social dilemma. \nW. Bradford Wilcox; Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia\nBrad Wilcox is Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia\, the Future of Freedom Fellow at the Institute for Family Studies\, and a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. The author of Get Married: Why Americans Should Defy the Elites\, Forge Strong Families and Save Civilization (Harper Collins\, 2024)\, Wilcox studies marital quality\, marital stability\, and the impact of strong and stable marriages upon men\, women\, and children. The author and editor of six books\, Wilcox has written for scientific journals such as The American Sociological Review and The Journal of Marriage and Family\, and The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Atlantic\, and National Review. A Connecticut native\, he now lives in Charlottesville\, Virginia with his wife and family.

SUMMARY:God and the Good Life: Big Questions of Faith\, Flourishing\, and Meaning
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton House and COLLIS Co-Present: \nGod and the Good Life\nBig Questions of Faith\, Flourishing\, and Meaning\nNovember 9th\, 2023\n5pm to 6pm ET\nReception to follow\nPhysical Sciences Building 120\nor remotely via Zoom (Registration Required) \nRegister Here \nDoes your strategy for getting through college seem inadequate to set you up for a good life? We know how to plan\, optimize\, and prepare for a good internship\, career\, or college experience. But\, do these methods work for creating a good life overall? Perhaps friendship\, community\, family\, and God suddenly hold more value in creating a truly good life. \nJoin us as we hear from philosophy professor Meghan Sullivan\, who has shepherded thousands of students in reasoning through big questions like these in Notre Dame’s most popular course\, “God and the Good Life.” She has inspired thousands more through her recent book\, The Good Life Method. Join us as Prof. Sullivan will introduce her method of philosophy for living well\, asking better questions\, telling true stories\, wrestling with suffering\, loving\, and believing. How can we create a robust system for when life doesn’t go as planned… and when all seems to be going well\, what actually matters? \nMeghan Sullivan; The Wilsey Family Collegiate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame\nProfessor Meghan Sullivan is the Wilsey Family Collegiate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. She serves as Director of the NDIAS\, a university-wide research institute that supports faculty\, doctoral students\, undergraduates and visiting fellows pursuing cross-disciplinary research on major ethical questions. Sullivan also serves as Director of the University Ethics Initiative\, working under the Office of the Provost to guide Notre Dame’s Ethics Priority in our recently adopted ND 2033 Strategic Framework. \nProfessor Sullivan’s research tends to focus on philosophical problems concerning time\, modality\, rational planning\, value theory\, and religious belief (and sometimes all five at once). Sullivan has been honored with one of Notre Dame’s Joyce Awards for Teaching\, with the Provost’s All-Faculty Team Award\, and with the City of South Bend’s 40 Under 40 Award. \nMore About Professor Sullivan Here \nRegister Here \n  \nCan’t make Thursday evening? Join Meghan for an interactive lab November 8th at Chesterton House! \n  \nThis event is made possible in part by the grant\, “In Lumine: Supporting the Catholic Intellectual Tradition on College Campuses Nationwide\,” (Grant #62372) from the John Templeton Foundation.

If love is a virtue we cultivate by working on our capacities for attention\, how do we improve? \nJoin Prof. Meghan Sullivan (University of Notre Dame) for dinner and an interactive workshop on love\, friendship\, and practicing philosophy as a way of life. This workshop draws from Prof. Sullivan’s “God and the Good Life” blockbuster course at the University of Notre Dame\, and her “soulcraft” approach to philosophical praxis in her book\, God and the Good Life. SUMMARY:Theological Society: The Trinity
DESCRIPTION:Reading Discussion: \nThe Trinity\nValdimir Lossky \n  \nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. Members of the group seek to nurture discussion by listening attentively to one another\, guarding the length of our responses\, and avoiding diversions to pet issues unrelated to the subject at hand. In short\, we seek to embody a uniquely Christian form of intellectual hospitality that we can pass on to future generations.
