SUMMARY:Elizabeth Bruenig
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives presents: \nThe Politics of Human Dignity\nBecause humans are made in the image of God\, every human life is precious and sacred. But how do we take that truth beyond our individual relationships? How should this theology shape our broader political\, social\, and economic institutions? \nElizabeth Bruenig\, staff writer at The Atlantic\, suggests that democratic socialism\, while long viewed with great suspicion by many American Christians\, offers one possible answer to these questions. Drawing from Scripture and the history of the early church\, she envisions a framework that places human dignity at the heart of social and economic decision-making. She distinguishes this vision from the authoritarian and totalitarian regimes many Americans fear\, inviting us to challenge our assumptions about wealth\, property\, and what it means to pursue the common good. \nThese same convictions about human dignity guide Bruenig’s opposition to capital punishment. If every person bears the image of God\, what does this mean for how we treat those responsible for the most serious crimes? Should the government even hold the power to take a human life? \nJoin us for a conversation with Elizabeth Bruenig as we explore these topics and wrestle with how our political and economic systems ought to reflect the God-given sacredness and dignity of human life. \nMonday\, November 16th\, 2026\n7:15pm EST at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:30 pm EST via Zoom \nregister here \n  \nElizabeth Bruenig; Staff Writer at The Atlantic \nElizabeth Bruenig is a staff writer at The Atlantic\, where she covers religion and criminal justice. Prior to The Atlantic\, Liz has written for the New Republic\, the Washington Post\, and The New York Times. She lives in Connecticut with her husband\, two daughters\, and three cats. \n  \nregister here \n

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture in Sage Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the beautiful Sage Chapel\, and snag a free lunch! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Tuesday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us! \nmore information

SUMMARY:Just Show Up Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for Our New Book Club: Theo of Golden by Allen Levi \n\n \n111 The Knoll Rd\n7pm – 8pm \nIn the fast-paced rhythm of university life\, education can quickly feel transactional—focused primarily on academic achievements\, credit accumulation\, and career preparation. Allen Levi’s Theo of Golden invites us to pause and reflect on a different approach to community and personal growth. \nThe story follows Theo\, an elderly newcomer whose quiet presence\, intentional listening\, and extraordinary generosity transform a small town. Rather than relying on grand gestures\, Theo demonstrates how genuine attentiveness and simple acts of kindness can restore meaningful human connection in a busy world. \nTogether\, we will explore how the themes of Theo of Golden can shape the way we live\, learn\, and engage with one another on campus. No prior reading is required—simply join the conversation.

SUMMARY:Theological Society: Ryan O'Dowd
DESCRIPTION:Guest Scholar: \nA Conversation with Ryan O’Dowd\nMore Than Meets the Eye: Reading Proverbs Well to Cultivate Wisdom\nThe book of Proverbs can seem deceptively simple. Typically utilizing fairly straightforward language\, it presents short and easily quotable snippets of wisdom. A second look\, however\, reveals a text that’s much more complex than a cursory reading would suggest. \nFor example\, Proverbs 26:4 says\, “Do not answer a fool according to his folly\, or you will also be like him.” But the very next verse says\, “Answer a fool according to his folly\, or he will be wise in his own eyes.” Is this just an obvious contradiction? Or is there something more sophisticated happening here? \nRyan O’Dowd\, Chesterton House Senior Academic Advisor and writer living in Atlanta\, GA\, has spent years wrestling with such questions and has written a comprehensive commentary on the book of Proverbs. Drawing on its unique literary structure\, its relationship to ancient wisdom traditions\, and its rich imagery—including the personifications of Wisdom and Folly—O’Dowd will help us see just how much we might be missing when we merely skim these seemingly simple passages. More than a collection of rules to be followed\, he suggests that the very process of learning to interpret Proverbs is itself an exercise in wisdom. \nJoin us for Theological Society as we explore this often under-appreciated book\, learn to read its familiar sayings with fresh eyes\, and reflect on the question at the heart of Proverbs: How do we become wise? \nRyan O’Dowd\, Pastor of Christ Church of Atlanta and Senior Academic Advisor at Chesterton House\nRyan O’Dowd is the Chesterton House Senior Academic Advisor and a writer living in Atlanta\, GA. Ryan started volunteering with Chesterton House in 2010 while serving on Air Force active duty at Cornell ROTC. He briefly served on the governing board before joining the staff in 2013. His academic research focuses on biblical wisdom and law and their intersection with Christian ethics. He has written several essays and book chapters as well as five books on topics related to biblical law and wisdom literature including “The Preacher’s Hebrew Commentary on Deuteronomy” (Hendrickson\, 2024) and “Proverbs” (Zondervan\, 2017). Ryan is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy (1994)\, Reformed Theological Seminary\, and the University of Liverpool (PhD). He and his wife\, Amy\, have three grown children and recently moved to Atlanta with their youngest daughter. \n\nTHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY\nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. Members of the group seek to nurture discussion by listening attentively to one another\, guarding the length of our responses\, and avoiding diversions to pet issues unrelated to the subject at hand. In short\, we seek to embody a uniquely Christian form of intellectual hospitality that we can pass on to future generations. \n  \nEmail to join

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture at the Knoll
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast on the Knoll! \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture at CHOP
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the Cornell House of Prayer (CHOP)\, and stay for a slice of pizza (or two!) \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. \nEvery Wednesday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us! \nmore information

\nmore information

SUMMARY:Logos 2100: The Bible & its Critics
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a deeper dive into fundamental issues in biblical studies\, hermeneutics\, and criticism.\n(Prerequisite: Logos 1100) \nStudents are expected to complete readings for each meeting session throughout this course. The workload is equivalent to a 1-credit course per semester. Taking Logos 1100 is a prerequisite\, but exceptions will be granted if students have taken similar courses to Logos 1100 in the past. Any Cornell student is eligible to participate; the seminar welcomes committed Christians\, nonreligious\, and skeptics\, but seminar participants should know that the seminar leader holds to the claims of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed of 381 and will be teaching from a Christian standpoint. \nSessions include discussion on readings of different perspecives and papers about the Bible and its interpretation. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of theories and methods which characterize the discipline of biblical studies and learn how to evaluate and apply these methods with the goal of faithful interpretation of the Scriptures. \nBeginning again on Monday\, August 31st\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 7:30pm–8:45pm at 111 Dr Jimmy Myer’s home.\n \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. As space is limited\, students will be asked to commit to attend all scheduled meetings.\n \napply today \nmore information \n
