SUMMARY:Sunday Night Dinner on the Knoll
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Night Dinners are such a space where our living-learning community extends hospitality to students and faculty over a home-cooked meal (or occasional catered in meal) and rich discussion. \nPRAXIS dinners focus on small group discussion on a particular prompt designed to help us think through how to practice the presence of God. \nAll are welcome to join for a free meal followed by group discussion of a selected reading from the historic Christian tradition. \n

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

SUMMARY:Markets\, Morality\, and the Medieval Christian Mind
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nMarkets\, Morality\, and the Medieval Christian Mind\nA Conversation with Mary Hirschfeld Professor of Economics and Theology at Villanova University \nFebruary 20th\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here \nMary Hirschfeld will be Zooming in to a live gathered audience at The Knoll. At the conclusion of the event\, in person attendees will partake in post conversation lead by Executive Director Dr. Vivek Mathew \n\nProf. Mary Hirschfeld\, trained with her doctorate from Harvard in economics\, had become an accomplished professor in a tenured post at Occidental College. But then as a faculty member she had an adult conversion to the Christian faith\, which then prompted her to reflect on the foundations of the modern economic discipline as a moral enterprise. \nHer questions on how to approach economics from a Christian perspective led her to leave a prized tenured post and begin a second doctorate in theology from Notre Dame. Now a professor of theology at Villanova\, she is one of the few very few scholars in the world who have a bi-cultural literacy through two very different lenses on the world. Join us as we gain perspective and insight on navigating what it means to live a virtuously economic life. \n\nMary Hirschfeld\, Professor of Economics and Theology at Villanova University\nMary Hirschfeld earned her Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1989\, specializing in the fields of macroeconomics and economic history. She was a professor of economics at Occidental College from 1988 to 2003 and she also served as Chair of the Department of Economics and as a member of several committees\, including the institution’s Educational Policy Committee. Following a conversion to Catholicism\, she left her position to study moral theology at Notre Dame\, earning her Master of Theological Science degree in 2005. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the field of moral theology at Notre Dame. Her dissertation focuses on a Thomistic framework for thinking about economics\, with an emphasis on consumption. \nIn the field of economics\, Professor Hirschfeld has explored research interests in feminist economics and heterodox approaches to economic theory. She has taught a variety of courses on topics that include the development of capitalism\, macroeconomics\, financial markets\, economics and philosophy\, European history\, and persecution in America. She is the author of several articles on economics in the Review of Economics and Statistics\, the Journal of Economic Education\, and History of Political Economy\, as well as a recent article on moral theology in the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics. In 2010\, Professor Hirschfeld was awarded a Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:TASTING GOD: Poetry of the Incarnation
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Evenings | January 18 – February 8 \n8:15pm – 9:30pm Eastern\n7:15pm – 8:30pm Central\n6:15 – 7:30pm Mountain\n5:15 – 6:30pm Pacific \nRegister Here \nTASTING GOD: Poetry of the Incarnation\nWhat does it mean for God to be described as a grain of wheat\, thrashed to pieces and baked into bread? Or a living book\, with our names written in the heart of the body? Central to Christian faith is the idea that God became human in the incarnation. We will explore poetry that helps us experience the beauty and strangeness of this central belief.
