DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Dr. Jimmy Myers and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning again on Monday\, September 14th\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–8:30pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester. \nDinner will be provided! \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending.\n \napply today \nmore information \n

DESCRIPTION:Chesterton House’s Theological Society Presents: \nA Conversation with Dr. David Gallagher\nApril 9th\, 2026 | 1:00pm \nemail to join \nOrdo Amoris: “Thomas Aquinas on Self-Love as the Basis for Love of Others”\nWhile most Christians understand that love for God is to supersede all other loves\, that does not mean all other loves should reside at an equal level. Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas’s massive work of systematic theology\, the Summa Theologiae\, explores the idea of ordo amoris\, or “the order of loves.” Perhaps surprisingly\, Aquinas identifies a proper love of self as foundational to rightly loving others. \nTheological Society welcomes Dr. David Gallagher to examine Aquinas’s framework for the ordo amoris\, including the categories through which Aquinas understands the proper ordering of love. Drawing on his own work as well as the Summa Theologiae\, Dr. Gallagher will guide us through this Thomistic framework before opening the evening to an extended question and answer session. \nDavid Gallagher\, Independent scholar\, former Associate Professor of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America\nDr. David Gallagher received his B.A. degree at the University of Navarra\, Spain\, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy at the Catholic University of America in Washington\, DC.  From 1988 to 1999 he was Assistant and then Associate Professor of Philosophy at The Catholic University of America. He focused primarily on the moral psychology of Thomas Aquinas\, publishing numerous scholarly articles in this area. Since then\, he has worked in New York on the U.S. National Board of the Catholic Prelature of Opus Dei. He continues to pursue academic interests by teaching and occasional publishing. \n\nTHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY\nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. Members of the group seek to nurture discussion by listening attentively to one another\, guarding the length of our responses\, and avoiding diversions to pet issues unrelated to the subject at hand. DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives presents: \nChristianity and the Crisis of Liberalism\nMonday\, October 19th\, 2026\n7:30pm EST in campus\n(location TBD\, reception to follow)\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom \nregister here \nThere is something about the soul that longs for freedom and an inviolable dignity that’s protected from such controls as arbitrary rule and government overreach. We recognize this impulse especially in our American founding and culture and often label it “liberalism.” An imperfect construct\, but certainly a net good…right? \nPatrick Deneen would argue no. Historically\, freedom was understood to require discipline and self-limitation of our desires as well as social and political institutions that encouraged such virtues. Deneen argues that modern liberalism rejected this understanding in favor of a freedom centered on individual choice and liberation from outside constraints. Ironically\, this unconstrained “freedom” ultimately requires greater government oversight in an attempt to manage the unrestrained behavior of its citizens. The result\, he claims\, is both moral and material depletion. \nIn summary\, liberalism is failing because of itself\, not in spite of itself\, and Deneen believes we must look beyond it. \nBefore throwing liberalism out the window\, however\, respondent John Owen cautions that the constitutional democracy associated with liberalism is still our best late-modern political option. Additionally\, he believes there is an alternative form of liberalism to be retrieved\, one grounded in the historic Christian tradition and more supportive of virtue\, institutions\, religious practice\, and individual conscience than the modern take that Deneen critiques. \nJoin us for an evening of lively conversation with Patrick Deneen and John Owen as they consider the weaknesses of modern liberalism and the role of the historic Christian tradition as we evaluate whether to retrieve what was lost or retire what has run its course. \n\nPatrick Deneen; Professor of Political Science\, University of Notre Dame \nJohn M.
