SUMMARY:Chesterton Perspectives: Danielle Treweek
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nUnraveling the Meaning of Singleness\n\nA Conversation with Danielle Treweek Christian Theological Researcher\, Author\, and Speaker\n \n\n\nMarch 25th\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom\n\n\nRegister Here \n\n\n\nSingleness: the unloved waystation on the road to marriage. Mainstream Christian figures from Tim Keller and Albert Mohler to James Dobson and John MacArthur would have us believe that marriage is the preferred state for everyone\, singleness the unfortunate consolation prize or the waiting stage before something “better”. But\, what if there’s something “better” about singleness that gets overlooked today? Christian scripture and tradition teach us that singleness and marriage are equal callings with their own riches and pains and with complimentary roles foreshadowing the eternal life that awaits us. Dani Treweek proposes that we turn from these shallow and contemporary caricatures to retrieve a richer and fuller sense of what it means to be human\, both here and in eternity. \nDanielle Treweek; Christian Theological Researcher\, Author\, and Speaker\nDanielle Treweek\, Rev’d Dr Danielle Treweek (BA\, B.Div (Hons)\, PhD)\, is an ordained deacon within the Sydney Anglican Diocese. After serving as an assistant minister at St Matthias Anglican Church\, Centennial Park\, she completed doctoral research into theology of singleness for the contemporary church through St Mark’s National Theological Centre in Canberra. She is the author of The Meaning of Singleness\, is commencing commentary work on 1 & 2 Thessalonians for Hodder & Stoughton and writes for publications including Christianity Today\, Themelios\, Mere Orthodoxy\, and ABC Religion & Ethics. She is the founding director of Single Minded Ministry\, teaches at Youthworks College in Sydney\, and is a member of the Doctrine Commission within the Sydney Anglican Diocese in which she also serves as Diocesan Research Officer. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Chesterton Perspectives: Abigail Favale
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nFeminism and the Family\n\nA Conversation with Abigail Favale Professor of the Practice\, Women’s Studies\, at University of Notre Dame\n \n\n\nFebruary 19th\, 2024\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom\n\nRegister Here\nWhat if the key to achieving female equality lies in embracing what makes women different from men instead of competing to be the same? Notre Dame Professor Abigail Favale was among the strongest feminist scholars in America\, when a religious transformation moved her to reassess the viewpoints she found herself defending. This reassessment led her to the conclusion that feminist theory has lost its way by trying to constantly conform to shifting trends in popular culture. The dominant culture today imposes the idea that women’s bodies are merely abstract objects of performance\, not necessarily related to “family.” From a young age\, girls are taught to strive to “keep up with the boys\,” as this is what is needed to create an “identity” for themselves—one that asks the question “What can females do\, build\, compete for\, and achieve?” without acknowledging or honoring the divine gift bestowed on them in creation. \nCoinciding with a rapid increase in girls preferring to be boys\, and the shocking rise of depression\, anxiety\, and self-harm among teens\, our culture has deviated from the creational uniqueness of women. While holding true to feminism’s vision of female equality and dignity\, Favale’s “Catholic Feminism” seeks to restore a theology of human identity grounded in family\, harmony\, wholeness\, and divine gift. \nAbigail Favale; Professor of the Practice\, Women’s Studies\, at University of Notre Dame\nAbigail is a writer and professor whose work lies at the intersection of Catholic theology\, literature\, and women’s studies. Her abiding interest as a writer and scholar is the meaning and dignity of woman\, and her work explores sexual difference and embodiment in the Catholic imagination. Her first book\, Irigaray\, Incarnation\, and Contemporary Women’s Fiction (Palgrave 2013) was awarded the 2014 Feminist and Women’s Studies Association Book Award. Her second book is Into the Deep: An Unlikely Catholic Conversion (Cascade 2018)\, a spiritual memoir that traces her journey from birthright evangelicalism to postmodern feminism and\, finally\, to the Catholic Church. Abigail’s most recent book\, The Genesis of Gender: A Christian Theory\, was published in 2022 by Ignatius Press and has already been translated into multiple languages. Her numerous essays have appeared in MICL’s Church Life Journal\, The Atlantic\, First Things\, Public Discourse\, Comment\, and elsewhere. Abigail is also a fiction writer and was awarded the J.F. Powers Prize for Short Fiction in 2017. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Chesterton Perspectives: W. Bradford Wilcox
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nFamily Drama: Does Marriage Matter?\n\nA Conversation with W. Bradford Wilcox Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia \n\n\nNovember 13th\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here\nIn today’s world\, the nuclear family unit seems to be a relic of the past. Culture has moved on to the flexibility of loving partners\, same-sex relationships\, open marriages\, and single parenting. But\, recent sociological data paints a more complicated picture… Marriage appears to make for happier people\, and children raised by two birth parents are doing better socially and economically than their peers. On the other hand\, the number of marriages is declining among middle and lower income populations. Children in these demographics are increasingly falling behind their peers. \nThe vast majority of young adults in this country want to get married\, yet the pool of “marriage-able” partners is dwindling… making the search for a compatible partner increasingly more difficult. Does marriage matter as we plan for our future and does getting married really impact our lives? Join us as we think through this urgent and multifaceted social dilemma. \nW. Bradford Wilcox; Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia\nBrad Wilcox is Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia\, the Future of Freedom Fellow at the Institute for Family Studies\, and a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. The author of Get Married: Why Americans Should Defy the Elites\, Forge Strong Families and Save Civilization (Harper Collins\, 2024)\, Wilcox studies marital quality\, marital stability\, and the impact of strong and stable marriages upon men\, women\, and children. The author and editor of six books\, Wilcox has written for scientific journals such as The American Sociological Review and The Journal of Marriage and Family\, and The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Atlantic\, and National Review. A Connecticut native\, he now lives in Charlottesville\, Virginia with his wife and family. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Gender\, Family\, and Patriarchy In Ancient Israel
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nGender\, Family\, and Patriarchy In Ancient Israel\n\nA Conversation with Cynthia Shafer-Elliott Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible / Old Testament at Baylor University \n\nSeptember 25th\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nThe Bible is often assumed by traditionalist conservatives to enshrine an idealized notion of “family”. Progressive Christians counter with assumptions about ancient gender inequality and patriarchal dominance that anachronistically project current notions onto ancient historical cultures. But recent archeological and social-historical studies suggest both of these fail to understand the ancient world of the Hebrew Bible on its own terms. \nWhile family inheritance was usually passed along through male heirs and patriarchy was a reality\, the average household was larger and more complicated than many recognize\, allowing for a more fluid sharing of authority and responsibility among the men and women in a community. Join us as Prof Cynthia Shafer-Elliott introduces us to the latest research of ancient households. \nCynthia Shafer-Elliott Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible / Old Testament at Baylor University\nDr. Cynthia Shafer-Elliott joined the Religion Department at Baylor University in 2022 from her native California. Her expertise and research focus on the historical\, cultural\, and social contexts of ancient Israel and Judah as reflected within both the archaeological record and the Hebrew Bible (with a particular interest in the Former Prophets). More specifically\, Dr. Shafer-Elliott’s research emphasizes household archaeology and issues of food\, gender\, religion\, and social memory. She is an experienced field archaeologist and is part of the archaeological excavations at Tel Halif and Tel Abel Beth Maacah in Israel. In 2018 she was the Ernest S. Frerichs Annual Professor at the W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research (Jerusalem). Furthermore\, Dr. Shafer-Elliott is involved with the American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR)\, the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL)\, and the Albright Institute of Archaeological Research (AIAR) in Jerusalem.\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Capitalism and Love of Neighbor: Can They Be Reconciled?
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nCapitalism and Love of Neighbor: Can They Be Reconciled?\nA Conversation with Sarah Estelle Associate Professor of Economics; Hope College \nApril 10th\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here \nTypically Christians who focus on the morality of markets and economics see the problem as “taming” markets to mitigate the unjust outcomes they tend to produce. Classically libertarian views are not usually looked upon favorably by Christian theologians who engage in economic questions\, being too fixated on individualism at the expense of the common good. Prof. Estelle has taken a different view\, defending the libertarian political economy inspired by F. A. Hayek and classical Christian thinkers such as Augustine and Aquinas. On her view\, markets can actually serve as an instrument of love\, and finds a surprising compatibility with Augustinian concerns of the classical Christian tradition. Join us in conversation with Sarah as we hear about her own journey in finding an unlikely synthesis between these approaches.\n\n\nSarah Estelle Associate Professor of Economics; Hope College\nProfessor Sarah Estelle is an associate professor of economics at Hope College. Because she believes economics can be useful everywhere and used by everyone\, she enjoys extending the theories and empirical techniques of microeconomics to questions located along the “imperialist” frontier of economic research. For example\, Professor Estelle has published work on criminal justice reform\, higher education\, risky adolescent behaviors and parents’ investments in children. More broadly yet\, Professor Estelle is intrigued by the role of government in human flourishing and is especially fascinated by the big ideas of Nobel Laureate economist F.A. Hayek related to knowledge and information\, cultural evolution\, and order not of design but of human action. \nMost recently Professor Estelle has undertaken work bridging the principles of traditional Christian teaching and classical liberal economics and especially applying the lessons of economics to the Christian virtue of love\, thickly construed. She is the director of Religious Liberty in the States\, a brand-new statistical index that measures the legal safeguards for the free exercise of religion in the United States. \nProfessor Estelle is the founding director of Hope’s Markets & Morality student organization\, which explores economic issues through a Christian lens and brings speakers and film screenings to campus to enrich the Hope community’s understanding of markets. Markets & Morality celebrates its 10th year in 2022–23. \n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Can Capitalism Be Christian? Economics and Social Hierarchies
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nCan Capitalism Be Christian? Economics and Social Hierarchies\nA Conversation with Jonathan Tran Associate Professor of Philosophical Theology and George W. Baines Chair of Religion \nMarch 27\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here \nWhat if it turned out that even well-intended attempts to remedy social and economic injustice actually made things worse? Jonathan Tran\, a theological ethicist at Baylor University\, has argued just this. On his telling\, an overly narrow focus on racial biases\, bigotry\, and interpersonal microaggressions (what in modern parlance goes by “antiracism”) unwittingly entrenches the very economic structures that allow racial oppression to persist.\n\nBut what if instead the goal that antiracism seeks in vain is better found in a revolutionary Christian ethic? What Christians most need today\, Tran argues\, is a kind of economic revolutionary spirit\, one that goes beyond mere Marxism\, which lacks the framework required for moral judgment and just action. On his view\, Christianity can supply just this sort of economic revolutionary spirit\, one that would be better suited to address oppressive social structures of what he terms “racial capitalism” by pushing for a Biblical vision of a just social order. Join us in conversation with Jonathan about theology\, social hierarchy\, and economic justice.\n\n\nJonathan Tran Associate Professor of Philosophical Theology and George W. Baines\nOriginally from Southern California\, Jonathan received his BA from University of California\, Riverside and his M.Div. and Ph.D. from Duke Divinity School where he studied under Stanley Hauerwas. He joined Baylor University’s Religion Department after completing his graduate studies in theology and ethics at Duke University. Currently\, he serves as Associate Dean of Baylor’s Honors College and Associate Professor of Theology within the Great Texts program. Jonathan teaches undergraduate and graduate courses while serving students\, staff\, and faculty in the Honors College\, and his research examines the theological and political implications of human life in language. \n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Love of Neighbor and the Dismal Science: Economics for Christians
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nLove of Neighbor and the Dismal Science: Economics for Christians\nA Conversation with Chris Barrett Stephen B. and Janice G. Ashley Professor of Applied Economics and Management and International Professor of Agriculture\, Cornell University \nMarch 6th\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here \nChris Barrett will be joining a live gathered audience at The Knoll. \n\nJesus’ commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves (MT 22:39) invites action. We then inevitably confront the difficult foundational questions of economics: Scarce resources necessitate tradeoffs\, so what is the best use of limited time\, talent and treasure? Since individual actions respond to structural incentives and constraints and may be dwarfed by broader (market or other) forces\, how should we act and assess others’ actions? Given human sinfulness\, what policies can induce behaviors that reduce material suffering of the poor? Join us in conversation with Chris Barrett\, Prof. of Applied Economics and Management\, of Agriculture\, and of Public Policy as we learn about development\, agricultural and resource economics\, poverty traps\, food insecurity\, how economic models can inform and mislead\, and more. \n\nChris Barrett Ph.D\, Professor of Applied Economics and Management and International Professor of Agriculture\, Cornell University\nChris Barrett is Stephen B. and Janice G. Ashley Professor of Applied Economics and Management\, and an international professor of agriculture at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management\, as well as a professor in Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy and a Senior Faculty Fellow of the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability\, all at Cornell University. He is co-editor-in-chief of the journal Food Policy\, edits the Palgrave Macmillan book series Agricultural Economics and Food Policy\, and co-edits the Elsevier Handbook of Agricultural Economics\, volumes 5 and 6. He has won several university\, national\, and international awards for teaching\, research and public outreach\, and is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association\, and the African Association of Agricultural Economists. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Markets\, Morality\, and the Medieval Christian Mind
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nMarkets\, Morality\, and the Medieval Christian Mind\nA Conversation with Mary Hirschfeld Professor of Economics and Theology at Villanova University \nFebruary 20th\, 2023\n7:30pm ET in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45pm ET via Zoom\n\nRegister Here \nMary Hirschfeld will be Zooming in to a live gathered audience at The Knoll. At the conclusion of the event\, in person attendees will partake in post conversation lead by Executive Director Dr. Vivek Mathew \n\nProf. Mary Hirschfeld\, trained with her doctorate from Harvard in economics\, had become an accomplished professor in a tenured post at Occidental College. But then as a faculty member she had an adult conversion to the Christian faith\, which then prompted her to reflect on the foundations of the modern economic discipline as a moral enterprise. \nHer questions on how to approach economics from a Christian perspective led her to leave a prized tenured post and begin a second doctorate in theology from Notre Dame. Now a professor of theology at Villanova\, she is one of the few very few scholars in the world who have a bi-cultural literacy through two very different lenses on the world. Join us as we gain perspective and insight on navigating what it means to live a virtuously economic life. \n\nMary Hirschfeld\, Professor of Economics and Theology at Villanova University\nMary Hirschfeld earned her Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1989\, specializing in the fields of macroeconomics and economic history. She was a professor of economics at Occidental College from 1988 to 2003 and she also served as Chair of the Department of Economics and as a member of several committees\, including the institution’s Educational Policy Committee. Following a conversion to Catholicism\, she left her position to study moral theology at Notre Dame\, earning her Master of Theological Science degree in 2005. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the field of moral theology at Notre Dame. Her dissertation focuses on a Thomistic framework for thinking about economics\, with an emphasis on consumption. \nIn the field of economics\, Professor Hirschfeld has explored research interests in feminist economics and heterodox approaches to economic theory. She has taught a variety of courses on topics that include the development of capitalism\, macroeconomics\, financial markets\, economics and philosophy\, European history\, and persecution in America. She is the author of several articles on economics in the Review of Economics and Statistics\, the Journal of Economic Education\, and History of Political Economy\, as well as a recent article on moral theology in the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics. In 2010\, Professor Hirschfeld was awarded a Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. \nRegister Here
