DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Dr. Jimmy Myers and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning again on Monday\, February 2\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–8:30pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester.  \nDinner will be provided! \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. \napply today \nmore information \n

DESCRIPTION:Guest Scholar: \nA Conversation with David Lincicum\nReading Paul Reading Scripture: Thinking with Paul about Biblical Interpretation\nIt is a fact that sometimes goes unnoticed: to read Paul’s letters is not only to hear from Paul as a writer but to engage with Paul the reader. Paul recurrently draws on authoritative texts as he makes his appeals\, presents his arguments\, and seeks to persuade his hearers to enter into greater alignment with the gospel of God. But he doesn’t draw on any authoritative texts! Reading Paul as a reader means reading a specific collection of texts: the sacred scriptures of Israel. \nWhat kind of reader of Israel’s scriptures is Paul? What version of the Bible (Hebrew? Greek?) is he reading? How does he work with the language of the texts he’s citing to make his point? Why does he sometimes allude to scripture rather than cite it? And what\, for Paul\, do the scriptures mean for his own community? \nJoin the Theological Society on Feb 19 as we welcome David Lincicum\, Associate Professor of Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity at Notre Dame\, to help us probe these matters. Along with being a leading expert in NT studies in the theology\, philosophy\, and biblical interpretation of the modern scholar\, F. C. Baur\, David has done extensive research into Paul as a reader of scripture and is therefore well-established to guide us through the complex matters involved in reading Paul as he reads the scriptures of Israel. \nDavid Lincicum\, Tisch Family Associate Professor of Theology\, University of Notre Dame\nProfessor David Lincicum is honoring a long tradition. He works at the intersection of early Jewish\, early Christian\, and New Testament studies.  \nProfessor Lincicum’s research has especially focused on investigating early Christian and Jewish biblical interpretation\, Pauline literature\, as well as the history of interpretation. He hopes that his monograph on Paul and the Early Jewish Encounter with Deuteronomy makes contribution not only to an understanding of Paul\, but also to the apprehension of Second Temple Judaism and the relation between the Old and New Testaments.  \nProfessor Lincicum is currently at work on an edition\, translation\, introduction and commentary for the curious text known as the Epistle of Barnabas. All of this research reflects his broad interest in New Testament and Early Christian studies\, but also his attempt to grapple seriously\, in cross-disciplinary investigations\, with Second Temple Judaism\, the formation of self-consciously Christian appropriations of the Old Testament\, and the history of New Testament study\, including the theological reception of the New Testament as Scripture. \n\nTHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY\nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. Discussion aims to satisfy what Simone Weil once described as the basic need of the soul to consider “every sort of opinion\, without the least restriction or reserve.” To this end\, we invite dialogue that explores and even challenges historic orthodox beliefs as well as those ideas that reign in the contemporary church\, academy\, and culture. \nOur dialogue is collegial and cordial without shying away from the hard questions scholars face in their life and work. DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the historic Cornell House of Prayer (CHOP)\, and stay for some free Insomnia cookies! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Thursday!
