Kavin Rowe is vice dean for faculty and George Washington Ivey Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Duke Divinity School. The first of three volumes of his collected essays has recently been published as “Leading Christian Communities.” He also is the author of “Christianity’s Surprise: A Sure and Certain Hope\,” “One True Life: the Stoics and Early Christians as Rival Traditions\,” “World Upside Down: Reading Acts in the Graeco-Roman Age” and “Early Narrative Christology.” He has published dozens of articles and essays\, and co-edited “The Word Leaps the Gap” and “Rethinking the Unity and Reception of Luke and Acts.” \nHe is on the editorial board of several international peer-review journals. Rowe has been a Fulbright Scholar\, Regional Scholar for the Society of Biblical Literature\, chair of the Society’s Southeastern Region New Testament section\, president of the Society’s Southeastern Region\, and was elected to the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas. DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Dr. Jimmy Myers and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning again on Monday\, September 14th\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–8:30pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester. \nDinner will be provided! \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending.\n \napply today \nmore information \n

SUMMARY:Logos 2100: The Bible & its Critics
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a deeper dive into fundamental issues in biblical studies\, hermeneutics\, and criticism.\n(Prerequisite: Logos 1100) \nStudents are expected to complete readings for each meeting session throughout this course. The workload is equivalent to a 1-credit course per semester. Taking Logos 1100 is a prerequisite\, but exceptions will be granted if students have taken similar courses to Logos 1100 in the past. Any Cornell student is eligible to participate; the seminar welcomes committed Christians\, nonreligious\, and skeptics\, but seminar participants should know that the seminar leader holds to the claims of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed of 381 and will be teaching from a Christian standpoint. \nSessions include discussion on readings of different perspecives and papers about the Bible and its interpretation. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of theories and methods which characterize the discipline of biblical studies and learn how to evaluate and apply these methods with the goal of faithful interpretation of the Scriptures. \nBeginning again on Monday\, August 31st\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 7:30pm–8:45pm at 111 Dr Jimmy Myer’s home.\n \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. Sujin Pak is Dean of the Boston University School of Theology and Professor of the History of Christianity. Her scholarship and teaching focus on the early modern period\, the Protestant Reformation\, and the history of biblical interpretation. Pak is the author of The Judaizing Calvin: Sixteenth-Century Debates on the Messianic Psalms (Oxford University Press\, 2010) and The Reformation of Prophecy: Early Modern Interpretations of the Prophet and Old Testament Prophecy (Oxford University Press\, 2018)\, as well as several articles appearing in journals such as Church History\, Renaissance & Reformation Review\, Religions\, and Calvin Theological Journal. As a teacher\, Pak encourages her students to engage a variety of perspectives with attention to their social contexts. Pak serves as secretary of the ATS Board of Directors\, president of AUMTS and Wesley Works\, vice president of the Calvin Studies Society executive board\, Reformation Area Editor for the Encyclopedia of the Bible and its Reception\, and member of the University Senate of the UMC. \n\nTHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY\nThis society seeks to gather Cornell faculty and graduate students to discuss major themes in biblical and theological studies. DESCRIPTION:Guest Scholar: \nA Conversation with Ryan O’Dowd\nRyan O’Dowd\, Pastor of Christ Church of Atlanta and Senior Academic Advisor at Chesterton House\nRyan O’Dowd is the Pastor of Christ Church of Atlanta and Senior Academic Advisor at Chesterton House. Ryan started volunteering with Chesterton House in 2010 while serving on Air Force active duty at Cornell ROTC. He briefly served on the governing board before joining the staff in 2013. His academic research focuses on biblical wisdom and law and their intersection with Christian ethics. He has written several essays and book chapters as well as five books on topics related to biblical law and wisdom literature including “The Preacher’s Hebrew Commentary on Deuteronomy” (Hendrickson\, 2024) and “Proverbs” (Zondervan\, 2017). Ryan is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy (1994)\, Reformed Theological Seminary\, and the University of Liverpool (PhD).
