SUMMARY:Logos Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Dr. Jimmy Myers and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning again on Monday\, February 2\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–8:30pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester. \nDinner will be provided! \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. \napply today \nmore information \n

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture in Sage Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Join us journey through the entire Bible together in the beautiful Sage Chapel\, and snag a free lunch! \nThe Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb these fascinating and complex texts without pressure or expectation. \n\nWhat is the value of the Public Reading of Scripture?\nAs we listen to the text being read aloud\,  we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. \nReading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice\, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings. \nReading through the whole Bible offers an experience like no other- no skipping over the uncomfortable or focusing on your favorite verses\, parables\, or stories. \nEvery Tuesday! We’ll be here every week this semester\, and we can’t wait for you to join us! \nmore information

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture at the Knoll
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll! \nmore information

SUMMARY:You're Only Human: Could Embracing Limits Unlock Your Fullest Postential?
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton House presents: \nYou’re Only Human: Could Embracing Limits Unlock Your Fullest Potential?\nMarch 9th\, 2026 | 5:30-7pm Lecture | 7-8pm Dinner Reception\nPhysical Sciences Building 120 | Virtual\nProvided dinner reception to follow in Physical Sciences Building 150 \nregister here \nLife at University is fast-paced and full to the brim: \nfull of coursework\, projects\, exams\, and papers \nfull of socializing\, meetups\, club gatherings and team practice \nfull of trips\, retreats\, and service opportunities. \nSo many around us are doing so many things with an apparent effortlessness that can only be envied. How do they do it? Where do they find the find the time? How do they have energy? Do they have any limits? How can I “hack” my life so that I can live with less limitations and become more than just an average and ordinary human being? \nThe achieve-a-tron world we inhabit at University teaches us to optimize our lives and overcome all human limitations. What if our human limitations were a gift essential to being human and not a weakness to transcend? \nHuman limitations––a gift? Finitude––good news? Perish the thought! Or… ponder it and consider its worth… Maybe the dream to do as much as possible\, to overcome our human limitations rather than embracing them with patience and grace\, is part of what is limiting us from being fully alive. \nJoin us as we welcome Kelly Kapic\, Professor of Theological Studies and the Honorary Chair of Theology and Culture at Covenant College\, who will attempt to persuade you that your human limitations are a good to be embraced rather than an evil to be transcended. Kelly has authored many books\, the most recent of which\, You’re Only Human: How Your Limits Reflect God’s Design and Why That’s Good New\, won a number of awards\, including Christianity Today’s Book of the Year award in the category of Theology (Popular) and The Southwestern Journal of Theology’s Book Award in Applied Theology/Ethics. \n  \nKelly Kapic\, Honorary Chair of Theology and Culture at Covenant College\nKelly M. Kapic holds the Honorary Chair of Theology and Culture at Covenant College where he has taught since 2001.  With a PhD in Systematic and Historical Theology from King’s College University of London\, Kapic has written or edited over twenty books. His newest book\, Christian Life (Zondervan Academic\, 2025) was just recently released\, and before that his volume You Were Never Meant to Do it All: A 40-Day Devotional on the Goodness of Being Human (Brazos 2025) was built on his earlier work You’re Only Human: How Your Limits Reflect God’s Design and Why that’s Good News\, which was published in 2022 and won a number of awards\, including Christianity Today’s Book of the Year award in the category of Theology (Popular) and The Southwestern Journal of Theology’s award in Applied Theology/Ethics.  His earlier work includes Embodied Hope: A Theological Meditation on Pain and Suffering\, which also won the Christianity Today book of the year award in the area of Theology and Ethics and World Magazine’s Short List award for Accessible Theology Book of the year.  A few years ago he completed two volumes with the economist Brian Fikkert called Becoming Whole: Why the Opposite of Poverty isn’t the American Dream and A Field Guide to Becoming Whole: Principles for Poverty Alleviation Ministries.  In 2014 Kapic received a Templeton Grant to be part of The Center for Christian Thought studying the topic of Psychology and Spiritual Formation.  He has also served as part of the Core Research Teams for the Templeton-funded studies\, including “Project Amazing Grace” and “Christian Meaning-Making\, Suffering\, and the Flourishing Life.” \nregister here \n

Some leaders of Tech companies even forecast that\, one day\, working will be optional for humans. \nSome consider this prospect a glorious possibility: finally\, many will be unburdened from their daily drudgery in factories\, behind counters\, driving automobiles\, and in the office. Humans will be free to spend their time the way they’d like\, without having to sacrifice so much of their life to unfulfilling labor. \nOthers express worry: how will people provide for themselves and their families\, pay their mortgage\, and avoid getting sucked into the Wall-E nightmare of spending all day long in front of a screen streaming endless entertainment? \nWhat is missing in much of the conversation is reflection on whether a world in which humans do not have to work is a world in which humans were ever meant to live. What kind of story about humans is presupposed in the notion that work might one day be optional? Why do we work? Because we must to earn money? Or does its purpose lie elsewhere––in the fact that we cannot help but be working creatures because we come from a working God who delights in making good things and instructs us to tend the creation around us? \nJoin us as we welcome Jeff Metzner\, the Vice President of Marketing\, Media\, and Communications on the P&G Walmart Global Customer Team. A leading  businessman and committed Christian\, Jeff will guide us in a conversation around the theology of work by engaging Dorothy Sayers’ classic essay entitled\, “Why Work?” Whether you’re concerned about the future state of labor in our world or simply asking basic questions about your work-saturated life\, you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to participate in this conversation with a leading Christian businessman whose insights have been hard-won through significant experiences… \nJeffrey Metzner; Vice President\, Digital Commerce\, Marketing and Media\, P&G Walmart Team\n\nJeffrey Metzner is responsible for Digital Commerce\, Marketing and Media on P&G’s Walmart US business. Prior to this role\, Jeff held numerous roles across the company\, most recently as the OTC Health Care Walmart team leader. Other assignments have included leading the North America Vicks brand and expanding Always Infinity into Europe and China. In his time at P&G\, Jeff has held assignments in OTC Health Care\, Oral Care\, Beauty\, Feminine Care\, Pharmaceuticals and Pet Care.  \nPrior to P&G\, Jeff built homes as a project manager for a large homebuilder in the Northeastern US. Jeff is passionate about values-based leadership and investing in those around him to build their own personal and business leadership skills. Jeff has taught Communication Effectiveness both inside and outside P&G and enjoys guest lecturing on effective brand building as well as personal purpose and values. Jeff has guest lectured at University of Arkansas since 2019 and guest lectured at Cornell University from 2019 to 2024. Jeff is on the University of Arkansas Retail Advisory Board. \nJeff is a native of Ohio and enjoys spending time with his family outdoors. Jeff and his wife Katy have six children and live in Northwest Arkansas. \nregister here

SUMMARY:Biblical Greek with Dr Jimmy Myers
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Biblical Greek will meet on a weekly basis\, with coursework expected to equate to 1 hour of personal study each day and 2 hours of class time per week. After 8 months of diligent studying\, you will be able to translate through the entirety of 1 John! This immersive course is designed for anyone who wants to read the Bible in its original language but has struggled to find the structure or motivation to learn on their own. Whether the idea has felt too daunting or you’ve attempted self-study without success\, this course provides the guidance\, accountability\, and framework needed to build real proficiency in Koine Greek. \nLed by Jimmy Myers\, Senior Post-Doctoral Fellow at Chesterton House and former Greek instructor at Duke Divinity School\, the course transforms the memorization of grammar and vocabulary into something surprisingly joyful. Through thoughtful teaching methods—including rhythm\, repetition\, and even song—Jimmy creates an engaging learning environment that helps the language take root. Students commit to one hour of daily study and two hours of weekly instruction\, mirroring the steady discipline of physical training. \nWith consistent practice\, students will develop the foundational skills needed to begin reading scripture directly from the Greek text. By the end of the course\, you will be able to read and translate the entire book of 1 John\, gaining not only linguistic competence but also a deeper\, richer understanding of the biblical narrative. For those longing to move beyond translations and encounter scripture firsthand\, this course offers both the challenge and the joy of learning to read the Bible in its original language. \nRegister Today

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Understanding: How Wonder and Awe Fuel Scientific Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton House and COLLIS Institute present: \nThe Beauty of Understanding: How Wonder and Awe Fuel Scientific Inquiry\nPanel Discussion with Brandon Vaidyanathan\, Prof. Tomás Arias (Cornell\, Physics) and Shaun Nichols (Cornell\, Philosophy) \nMarch 19th\, 2026 | 5:30pm\nClark 700 | Virtual\nProvided dinner to follow in Clark 701 \nregister here \n“The Beauty of Understanding: How Wonder and Awe Fuel Scientific Inquiry\,” a talk by Brandon Vaidyanathan (Sociology\, Catholic University of America) followed by a panel discussion with Brandon Vaidyanathan\, Tomás Arias (Physics\, Cornell University) and Shaun Nichols (Philosophy\, Cornell University) \nFor over two centuries\, critics have accused science of disenchanting the world\, turning rainbows into wavelengths and mysteries into mechanisms. Yet many prominent contemporary scientists describe science itself as a wellspring of beauty\, awe\, and wonder. What does beauty mean in the everyday practice of science\, and how does the pursuit of understanding shape scientific work\, motivation\, and well-being? This talk presents findings from the first global empirical study of aesthetics in scientific practice\, based on nationally representative surveys of more than 3000 physicists and biologists in the US\, UK\, Italy\, and India\, and more than 200 in-depth interviews. Scientists consistently describe three kinds of beauty in their work: the sensory beauty of phenomena\, the useful beauty of elegant theories and experiments\, and the beauty of understanding–the thrill of discovering the hidden order or inner logic underlying the phenomena that scientists study. These aesthetic experiences are not rare: most scientists report frequent moments of awe\, reverence\, and newly opened mysteries\, which in turn motivate perseverance\, deepen learning\, and support well-being. Yet the pursuit of beauty unfolds within institutional conditions often marked by burnout\, mistreatment\, and the pressures of “publish or perish\,” which can undermine the very wonder that draws people into science. \nSchedule:\n5:30 PM – 6:15 PM Talk\n6:15-6:45 PM: Panel Discussion with Brandon Vaidyanathan\, Prof. Tomás Arias (Cornell\, Physics) and Shaun Nichols (Cornell\, Philosophy)\n6:45 PM – 8:00 PM: Dinner Reception \nJoin us for this conversation\, a collaboration of the COLLIS at Cornell and the Chesterton House. \nBrandon Vaidyanathan; Associate Professor and Chair\, Department of Sociology\, The Catholic University of America\nDr. Brandon Vaidyanathan is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Institutional Flourishing Lab at The Catholic University of America. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia and HEC Montreal respectively\, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame. \nHe is author of Mercenaries and Missionaries: Capitalism and Catholicism in the Global South (Cornell University Press\, 2019)\, co-author of Secularity and Science: What Scientists Around the World Really Think About Religion (Oxford University Press\, 2019)\, and co-editor of Rebuilding Trust: Clergy Morale in the Wake of the Abuse Crisis (CUA Press\, 2025). His work has been funded by grants from the John Templeton Foundation\, Templeton Religion Trust\, the Lilly Endowment\, and Burroughs Wellcome Fund. \nHe is also Founder of Beauty at Work\, a media platform which includes a podcast and YouTube channel that aims to expand our understanding of beauty: what it is\, how it works\, and why it matters for the work we do. \nregister here \n

DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nFriend or Foe: The Goods (and Evils) of AI\nA conversation with Rosalind Picard\, Grover M. Hermann Professor in Health Sciences and Technology at the MIT Media Lab\nMarch 23\, 2026\n7:30 pm EST in person\n7:45pm EST via Zoom \nregister here \nNearly every day another article drops the headline: “Beware the dangers of AI!” The threats are manifold: the disintegration of human intellect and interpersonal skills; the replacement of human workers with humanoid bots; perhaps\, some suggest\, even the annihilation of the human race itself. These apocalyptic visions result in the reasonable call for caution and serious reflection on how AI shapes human flourishing. \nBut what if these dramatic threats are massively overstated? What if that future is far less likely than we fear? Could it be that\, in the fervor of it all\, we’ve forgotten some crucial things: that AI does not evolve on its own but has to be built\, and that human beings remain responsible for what they create? \nMight this doomsdaying be keeping us from exploring real benefits for real people: freeing them from menial and life-denying work\, improving care for those vulnerable to seizure\, and perhaps one day preventing most diseases? \nAnd\, what if the most harmful effects of AI are actually more hidden\, less acknowledged issues related to mental health\, addiction\, and loneliness? \nIn other words\, we need to think less about the visions of apocalyptic doomsayers and more about this human side of digital tech. \nJoin us as we welcome MIT Professor and AI researcher Roz Picard to Chesterton Perspectives. Recently interviewed by the BBC on these questions\, she brings insight not only as a scientist and engineer\, but also as an entrepreneur\, inventor\, and a Christian. Together\, we’ll think through the goods and evils of AI and how to navigate this explosive topic as people of faith. \n. \nRosalind Picard; Grover M. Hermann Professor in Health Sciences and Technology at the MIT Media Lab\nRosalind Picard is Grover M. Hermann Professor in Health Sciences and Technology at the MIT Media Lab\, where she is founder and director of the Affective Computing Research Group\, Associate Academic Head\, and affiliated with the MIT Center for Neurobiological Engineering. She is the author of the book Affective Computing and co-author of hundreds of peer-reviewed science and engineering articles in artificial intelligence\, digital health\, affective computing\, and human-computer interaction. An inventor on over 100 worldwide and US patents\, she is co-founder and chief scientist of Empatica\, providing FDA-cleared digital biomarkers and medical quality data and devices for clinical trials and research studies\, and helping people with epilepsy and Parkinson’s. Picard is also co-founder of Affectiva\, now part of Smart Eye AB. She is a popular speaker with a TED talk of over 2 million views. Picard is a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, the National Academy of Inventors\, and a fellow of the IEEE\, ACM\, and AAAC. She received the 2022 International Lombardy Prize for Computer Science Research\, the 2025 Trotter Prize in Information\, Complexity and Inference\, and the 2026 IEEE Medal for Innovations in Healthcare Technology. \nregister here
