SUMMARY:Why You Should Say No to Digital Technology: A Theological Case for Techno-pessimism
DESCRIPTION:Chesterton Perspectives brings you: \nWhy You Should Say No to Digital Technology: A Theological Case for Techno-Pessimism\nA conversation with Brad East\, Associate Professor of Theology at Abilene Christian University\nOctober 27th\, 2025\n7:30 pm EST in person at 111 The Knoll Rd\n7:45 pm EST via Zoom \nregister here \nIt happens almost every year\, if not every quarter: a new technology drops\, a celebration ensues\, and the public begins to consume\, exchanging models now passé for the next iteration that has cleaned up the spoils and spots plaguing the old. Each innovation comes with its promises of progress and advance: more speed\, more intelligence\, more connectivity\, more immersion\, more time for pleasure\, more escape from the wreckage in the world. \nThere is so much preoccupation with what could be that we rarely stop and wonder whether it should be. What if digital technologies\, and the accelerationist impulse underlying their development\, aren’t good for human beings? What does human flourishing realistically look like? Does technology advance this flourishing? How do these questions weigh on the technology industry in our fast-paced\, advancement driven world? \nAnd so it is worth pausing to wonder: Is digital technology good for human beings and communities? What are humans made for? What is the goal of immersion in technology\, and how far does it square with the goal of human life? \nThese are some of the questions we will explore as we welcome public theologian and tech-critic\, Brad East (PhD\, Yale University). Brad is an associate professor of theology at Abilene Christian University in Abilene\, Texas. He has authored four books\, and his most recent book on technology is soon to be released. \nBrad East; Associate Professor of Theology at Abilene Christian University\nBrad East (PhD\, Yale University) is an associate professor of theology in the College of Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University in Abilene\, Texas. He is the editor of Robert Jenson’s The Triune Story: Collected Essays on Scripture (Oxford University Press\, 2019) and the author of four books: The Doctrine of Scripture (Cascade\, 2021)\, The Church’s Book: Theology of Scripture in Ecclesial Context (Eerdmans\, 2022)\, The Church: A Guide to the People of God (Lexham\, 2024)\, and Letters to a Future Saint: Foundations of Faith for the Spiritually Hungry (Eerdmans\, 2024). His articles have been published in Modern Theology\, International Journal of Systematic Theology\, Scottish Journal of Theology\, Journal of Theological Interpretation\, Anglican Theological Review\, Pro Ecclesia\, Political Theology\, Religions\, Restoration Quarterly\, and The Other Journal; his essays and reviews have appeared in The Christian Century\, Christianity Today\, The Chronicle of Higher Education\, Comment\, Commonweal\, First Things\, Front Porch Republic\, The Hedgehog Review\, The Lamp\, Living Church\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, Marginalia Review of Books\, Mere Orthodoxy\, Mockingbird\, The New Atlantis\, Plough\, The Point\, The Public Discourse\, and Sapientia. \nregister here

SUMMARY:Logos Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a guided journey in our award-winning Logos Seminar (which earned Chesterton House an Oases of Excellence designation from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni). The Logos Seminar takes a small cohort of students through the classical Christian tradition and its critics\, allowing them to hear from world-class Christian scholars and providing the opportunity to approach various viewpoints from a charitable\, challenging\, and curious perspective in a hospitable setting. \nIt offers students a rare chance to deliberate together on some of the most contested topics—topics that\, when brought up on campus\, often find themselves in a skeptical or even hostile environment. \nCo-taught by Biblical scholar Dr. Jimmy Myers and philosopher Dr. Vivek Mathew\, sessions will be a mix of foundational study of classical Christian (and anti-Christian) texts\, fundamental issues in Biblical studies and hermeneutics\, and an introduction to a wide variety of Christian (and non-Christian) perspectives on challenging contemporary topics. \nBeginning again on Monday\, February 2\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–9pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester. \nDinner will be provided! \n*Please note that this is a closed course and acceptance is required before attending. \napply today \nmore information \n

SUMMARY:Public Reading of Scripture at the Knoll
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday mornings for our Public Reading of Scripture and a free breakfast on the Knoll! \n  \nOur Public Reading of Scripture events are a time to gather in community to hear The Bible read aloud while sharing a meal. \nAll you have to do is listen. \nThis multi-level experience will allow you to slow down and absorb the Word of God without pressure or expectation. \n  \nWhy Join Public Reading of Scripture\nThe Bible is a Key\nThe Bible has had such an impact in the history of humanity\, learning more about what it says and teaches will unlock a new understanding to history and literature. \nIt’s a Biblical Practice\nIn Scripture we often see God’s people receive God’s Word aloud together as a community. \nSpiritual Food\nWhile we are all very aware that we need food to duel our physical bodies\, reading scripture is a spiritual discipline we can practice to feed ourselves spiritually. \nA Better Bible Strategy\nIt takes 90 hours to listen to the Bible in it’s entirety\, yet hardly anyone every reads through it all. Many of us want to read more of the Bible\, but few have a disciplined strategy to succeed. Reading/hearing Scripture aloud in community makes it easy as you listen while you eat and find a small community of people who journey through the Bible with you over the year. \nHope to see you on the Knoll!

\nBeginning on Monday\, September 15th\, our meetings will be selected Monday evenings from 6:30pm–9pm at 111 The Knoll during the semester.

SUMMARY:Was the Church Right About the Sexual Revolution?
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by Chesterton House and COLLIS Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture\nWas the Church Right About the Sexual Revolution? Taking Stock of a Failed Experiment\nApril 9\, 2025\n6:30 pm EST | 111 The Knoll Rd\n*Registration Required \nRegister Here \nFew movements have had as much social transformation as the sexual revolution. More freedom\, more sex\, more control over how and when we reproduce—the sexual revolution promised a happier and more equitable future. Paradoxically\, however\, recent research has suggested that women are less happy now than half a century ago. A slew of books in recent years now question whether the sexual revolution overpromised and underdelivered. Join us for a conversation with Mary Eberstadt on taking stock of the sexual revolution—and whether the Church predicted what we’re seeing today. \n  \nMary Eberstadt ’83; Panula Chair in Christian Culture\, Catholic Information Center\nMary Eberstadt is an American writer\, and author of several influential books including How the West Really Lost God; Adam and Eve after the Pill; and Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics. She also authored a novel called The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life\, Death\, and Atheism\, which debuted as a stage-play in 2017. She has written for many journals and magazines\, and her work has been translated into numerous languages. \nMrs. Eberstadt is a senior research fellow at the Faith and Reason Institute\, and she holds the Panula Chair at the Catholic Information center in Washington\, DC. Her early career includes two years as a speechwriter to an American Secretary of State\, George Shultz\, and another year as speechwriter to a U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations\, Jeane Kirkpatrick. She holds honorary doctorates in humane letters from Seton Hall University in New Jersey and from Magdalen College\, New Hampshire. \nMary Eberstadt is delighted to be appearing this week at her alma mater. She grew up in Central New York\, and she enjoys several personal ties to Cornell\, where she graduated magna cum laude with a double major in Philosophy and Government. Her senior paper\, on Immanuel Kant’s theory of aesthetic judgment\, was supervised in part by a mentor who was one of the titans of\nCornell’s philosophy faculty\, the late Norman Kretzmann. Mary resided throughout her undergraduate years in Telluride House\, and she worked for four years as a special assistant in the Philosophy Department. \nFinally\, Mary is also embarking in 2025 on a new\, five-year\, multidimensional project\, “Remembering Upstate New York\,” dedicated to bringing the region’s extraordinary history and culture to new literary and theatrical life. Updates about the project\, its team\, and her other work can be found on her website\, maryeberstadt.com
