Social media and contemporary cultural conflict is seeing a resurgence of shame as a tool of social control. Modern psychology draws distinctions between guilt (over what one has done) with shame (over one’s very being). Such distinctions have been explored and popularized by psychologists like Brene Brown and others, but these do not perfectly map onto Biblical and historical theological categories of sin, grace, and redemption, among others. Join us in conversation with Mary Vanden Berg, professor of Systematic Theology at Calvin Theological Seminary, to explore these issues and how the Christian tradition offers resources to a shame-saturated culture.
