In his recent book, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self, historical theologian Carl Trueman takes the reader on a detailed tour through intellectual history, arguing that the emergence of today’s cultural flashpoints on sexuality and gender really emerge from changing ideas of the self,. Sigmund Freud is a pivotal hinge point in this cultural transformation, moving from a vision of sexuality as needing a proper ordering on both religious and philosophical grounds, to a more expressive and individualist approach to sexuality that is often assumed today.
With this Freudian pivot, longstanding Christian views of sexuality and the self come under suspicion, as they prevent humans from fully expressing themselves. How should Christians respond? Join us in conversation with Carl Trueman as we explore how rival concepts of human selfhood play out in our culture wars.
