For Christians venturing into topics of sexuality and gender, one of the strangest and yet most crucial historic claims of the church is that sexual desire is intricately bound up with our longing for God. This linking of sexual desire and desire for God is not at all obvious, and yet plays a central role in many historic Christian traditions as they grapple with the right ordering of sexuality within a divinely created, God-filled cosmos.

Sarah Coakley is a preeminent theologian and Anglican priest whose work over several decades has explored these connections. Her wide-ranging discussion of everything from mystical and contemplative prayer to feminist and queer theologies have earned her a wide audience of scholars and laypeople alike who have found her work an unexpected alternative to stalemated culture wars. Join us in conversation as we explore her own complex work together.

Professor Coakley will be present via zoom.
