Chris Barrett will be joining a live gathered audience at The Knoll.
Jesus’ commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves (MT 22:39) invites action. We then inevitably confront the difficult foundational questions of economics: Scarce resources necessitate tradeoffs, so what is the best use of limited time, talent and treasure? Since individual actions respond to structural incentives and constraints and may be dwarfed by broader (market or other) forces, how should we act and assess others’ actions? Given human sinfulness, what policies can induce behaviors that reduce material suffering of the poor? Join us in conversation with Chris Barrett, Prof. of Applied Economics and Management, of Agriculture, and of Public Policy as we learn about development, agricultural and resource economics, poverty traps, food insecurity, how economic models can inform and mislead, and more.

Chris Barrett is Stephen B. and Janice G. Ashley Professor of Applied Economics and Management, and an international professor of agriculture at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, as well as a professor in Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy and a Senior Faculty Fellow of the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, all at Cornell University. He is co-editor-in-chief of the journal Food Policy, edits the Palgrave Macmillan book series Agricultural Economics and Food Policy, and co-edits the Elsevier Handbook of Agricultural Economics, volumes 5 and 6. He has won several university, national, and international awards for teaching, research and public outreach, and is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, and the African Association of Agricultural Economists.
